The Decemberists – The Rake's Song Lyrics 15 years ago
Following a lovely intermission, we have the rake's song.

In short, he gets married at 21 and does the no pants dance all around the house with his new wife. Apparently, he missed sex-ed and is disgusted when she starts popping out babies left and right. He doesn't seem to connect sex to having babies because his wife dies giving birth to their fourth child.

Now he's stuck with three kids (#4 died with mom). Naturally, he decides his best option is to murder them all. Who really wants to bother with orphanages? The children are sure to come looking for you later.

He is completely unashamed of his acts. Alright?

The Decemberists – The Wanting Comes in Waves/Repaid Lyrics 15 years ago
This is where things begin to come together for me.

"Swore to save me from the world of men" - For a split second, I wondered if he was gay. Then I crossed that off my mental list of possibilities.

Running with the assumption that Margie and Will are singing from afar, I'm going to assume that Will is waiting for Mom (Queen) and knows that she did some nice forest voodoo magic to save him from scorn, but his wanting for Margie is upon him and he is tired of keeping some old woman company.

On a sidenote, the Queen makes her grand appearance with some pretty bada** music and strong vocals. Very nice.

Anywho, Queen agrees Will can have one night with Marge. Either they've been singing from afar, and he can now go to her; or they're already together, and they get to finish out their night. The first seems to make more sense at the moment.

The Decemberists – The Hazards of Love 2 (Wager All) Lyrics 15 years ago
Forest music chills out as William appears. They are in love... and make love among the insects and animal droppings and clover in the forest. Hazards of love.

Up to this point in the album, everything's rather fuzzy. It makes sense, but there are still some minor holes that I can't seem to figure out. Whatever. On with the show.

The Decemberists – Won't Want for Love (Margaret in the Taiga) Lyrics 15 years ago
Next we have sweet Margaret wandering into forest looking for dear William. Dark forest music follows her, and she kindly asks for a path to lead her to William. Why do I get the feeling it won't comply?

Despite her pregnancy, she 'wants' William.

Seeing as I've listened all the way through a couple times, I wonder if it takes them a while to find each other because the Queen seems to have some power of the forest and keeps them separated for a while.

However, Margie knows if she can find Will, she won't want for love...

(Whoever was chosen for Margaret does fantastic and represents Margaret's frailty well with her vocals.)

The Decemberists – A Bower Scene Lyrics 15 years ago
So, if Margie is a prostitute the bit about sisters and cisterns would imply that her biological sister noticed she was pregnant and asked when she was due and who the baby-daddy was.

If she's noble, maybe the 'sister' is a nun, or maybe she's still biological. She could still be asking when she's due or possibly when she will confess her sins.

Overall, I just assume that stanza could have numerous meanings. All flow with the story and make decent sense.

Then she goes to the forest because she's showing.

Cue threatening forest music.

Definitions: IRASCIBLE - hot tempered; BLACKGUARD - kitchen servant (according to Merriam, this is obsolete); rude or unscrupulous

The Decemberists – The Hazards of Love 1 (The Prettiest Whistles Won't Wrestle the Thistles Undone) Lyrics 15 years ago
For my sanity, I'm going to battle my way through this album interpretively.

Following what I find to be an unnecessarily long, but affective prelude Margaret wonders into the forest and finds this fawn. The fawn is white (which generally symbolizes purity/perfection/whatever), but ironically appears wounded (and is a product of some sort of dark magic).

"The Taiga shifted strange
The beast began to change" - beautiful line. Forest stirs and beast changes to man.

Anywho, apparently "The prettiest whistles won't wrestle the thistles undone". Whatever this means, it seems to be important, and at the very least is sounds nice. I like ASmileWithoutACat's interpretation best thus far.

I'm going to toy with the theory that Margaret is a prostitute - If she were, then after finding William and making love, she can no longer bring herself to sell her body any longer.

If she's just a girl, she came back home and all her not-in-love maiden pals sat comfortably idle while she only thought of dear William.

Mae – The Fisherman Song (We All Need Love) Lyrics 16 years ago
Seems to me like the fisherman is Jesus. In the Bible, he isn't a fisherman, but several of his disciples are.

Multiple times in the Bible Jesus is associated with fishing: After a period of unsuccessful fishing, he tells his disciples to cast their nets on the other side of the boat and they immediately catch more fish than they can haul in. He also tells his disciples to be "fishers of men" (to teach nonbelievers about him so that they can be saved and go to heaven). Today a fish commonly symbolizes Christianity.

I can't think of anything that directly points to Jesus as an actual fisherman, but it definitely fits the song because the singer goes to the fisherman and is told to love and have faith.

All Time Low – Toxic Valentine Lyrics 16 years ago
I just looked at this soundtrack and it looks amazing! It features Florence and the Machine, ALL TIME LOW, Dashboard Confessional, Panic at the Disco, Silversun Pickups, AND Cobra Starship. And I rather like this song. It's not what we generally know as All Time Low, but it's cool and more like their earilier stuff. (like, REAL early)

My Chemical Romance – Cemetery Drive Lyrics 16 years ago
There's a little voice in the back of my head telling me not to do this; however, I'm going to do it anyway.

I spent about an hour last night reading through the lyrics to the songs preceding this song on Three Cheers. Then I got sidetracked for an hour reading the comments on this one song. Then my computer lost connection for reasons unknown to me.

Quite frankly, I enjoy a good debate. Unfortunately, I'm yet to see anyone make a good point. This has been going for over two years and NO ONE has make a decent point.

First, let me state that I listen to MCR because they are the closest I can come to what I consider 'screamo' without being what I consider 'screamo'. Screamo scares me, but MCR has really intense (I can't think of the term I really want to use there) songs that don't include yelling half the lyrics at me. I appreciate that.

To this day, I do not understand people who believe MCR has saved their life. I have never listened to them because of their lyrics (except for 'Teenagers'). Gerard has a sick, twisted mind and if that's what you relate to, you need help. I'm sorry, but you do. As far as I'm concerned, Gerard probably needs help.

I don't understand the whole 'emo' debate because I've always thought the term 'emo' was short for 'emotional'. If so, these songs are 'emo'. On that same note, most music would be 'emo'. Rap is the only exception I can think of.

The people on here insulting people for listening to MCR really need to get a hobby. Personally, I listen to everything from MCR to Flo Rida to Daphne Loves Derby to 3OH!3 to The Format to The Hush Sound to The Films to Taylor Swift. I tend to prefer Alternative music, but I will listen to just about anything. I've found that people who are closed minded about music don't generally know a lot about music and tend to go with the flow of pop culture. This is tragic cause you never think about the music you listen to, but I suppose that's your loss.

Finally, I'm loving the people that get mad at everyone for being off topic and then give you their opinion. Hypocrites. But I digress.

***Skip to here if you are tired of the debate that's lasted the past seven pages.**

Originally, I started reading lyrics on here to see if I could put together the concept behind this album. I know it's supposed to be about a man, a woman, and 1000 souls. Most of the songs seem to be about a man and a woman in some sort of a relationship, but I thought the album was also about him having to bring 1000 souls to the devil. Clearly some people die, but at the risk of sounding twisted, where's the mass murder? I know 'I Never Told You' is supposed to be about a serial killer, but that's the only one that I can tell fits into the 'concept'. It seems like this guy has died in almost every song so I'm thinking he failed his mission early in the album.

I just confused myself typing that paragraph. What I was trying to say is, can someone please explain how the concept works into each song cause I'm not seeing it?

All Time Low – Too Much Lyrics 16 years ago
Am I the only that noticed how ironic the song order is? Walls talks about 'falling so in love with you and no one else'. We follow that up with talking about being 'smothered in love' and having 'too much'.

Irony aside, this song is a not what I expected from All Time Low. I wish they had taken a more acoustic route instead leaning towards a techno beat; that might have helped a bit.

Overall I like the new album. It's different and took some getting used to, but I like it. This particular song simply is not a high point in Nothing Personal.

All Time Low – Remembering Sunday Lyrics 17 years ago
I always imagine this song in a small house near a lighthouse. The guy in the house "runs" the lighthouse. He lives in a very small town and doesn't get out very much, but he meets this amazing girl that he falls in love with. They have some sort of a relationship (one-night stand or something more serious. i don't know) and he is in love and believes she is too. She leaves one day on a plane ("so many thousands of feet off the ground")and he looses it. Gets drunk starts asking around about her. He doesn't really know many of the neighbors or anyone in town ("unfamiliar faces") so they don't pay him much attention, but "he pleads though he tries but he's only denied".

Anyway, back to the lighthouse deal. Something about "leaning now, into the breeze" and the rain makes me think of him up at the top of the lighthouse keeping it "running" at two in the morning and/or on his backporch looking out over a stormy ocean with dark blues and greys.

I could go even more in depth, but I think this is quite long enough. And yes, I know that the song isn't really about Alex and a some girl in a lonely lighthouse village so don't berate me for not having the story right. K?

All Time Low – Six Feet Under the Stars Lyrics 17 years ago
Sometimes I listen to this song and think he's saying "warm enough" but other times it sounds more like "warming up", BUT in the acoustic version where it gets quieter later in the song I swear it says "warming up".
Whichever. They both make perfect sense and this song is completely awesome. It was among the first All Time Low songs I fell in love with and then I really didn't like it much for a while and now I can't stop listening to it. But it's amazing and really sweet in this kinda twisted sense.
And, the acoustic version is just as good as the regular. They are both awesome in their own way:)

Okay that last sentence was a wee bit cheesy...

All Time Low – Jasey Rae Lyrics 17 years ago
Okay, I'm gonna go totally against the grain and say I definitely like the non-acoustic version way better. The acoustic's good, but it's just not right for some reason.

Anyway, the lyrics to this song are probably in the top ten list of best lyrics written. Every line in this song is point-blank amazing.

I've never told a lie
And that makes me a liar
I've never made a bet
But we gamble with desire
I've never lit a match
With intent to start a fire
But recently
The flames are getting out of control

Who can't relate to that? Maybe not in the exact context of the song, but just in general. You say you've never told a lie, that's bull I don't care who you are. And you play with matches (not literally. well, maybe) because it's fun, not intending to starts fires; but you know something bad's likely to happen weater you mean for it to or not.

Daphne Loves Derby – Cue The Sun Lyrics 17 years ago
Good lord! Why does everybody just assume so many songs are about suicide? Idk if it's just me and TreMyUncle, but that's not all that relatable. I know some people truly are suicidal and that's sad, but I don't know very many people that enjoy thinking some of their favorite songs are about suicide.

Anywho, I definitely agree with whoever said it was easier to take it as a general idea and not try to nail down every phrase. Overall, I think this is about a relationship that has had problems, but now they're facing something really big and it's seems to be affecting this guy pretty profoundly.
I think they've been trying to figure their problem out for a while and where it says

"And if I don't come home tonight,
Just know I tried my best to fight.
Please don't think I plan to lose to the night."

He's telling her that if they can't get something figured out tonight, to know that he's trying and that he doesn't plan to loose their entire relationship.

There. No suicide:)

This is one of the cutest songs ever. It seems like the perfect relationship. -

"And she watches the sun
but she's the only one I have my eyes on" -

But, I think the "tell me that you love me" isn't begging, it's just playful. Like, "Say you love me one more time" because it's so wonderful to hear and if they ever fight that fixes everything.

I've always thought about it more like, he's telling this girl about how he wants them to do all the stuff in the song and he's showing her the map and is like "let's go" and doesn't want her to tell him they can't just run off for a weekend ("please don't tell me that I'm dreaming")

It just seems so happy and I don't really like thinking about it like he's singins about past relationship, but that's just me.

And! The guitar in the chorus is awesome:) This is prolly my favorite MP song ever.

I thought it was about the girl, NOT the guy, going away. Like, in the first verse she tells him she's got to go away for a long time. And she leaves the room for him to digest the info & he's basically freaking out because he doesn't know what he'll do without her. From there out, I agree with everybody else about the meaning. Except for whoever said the baby thing. That never crossed my mind, but it made me laugh. "Reaching down and hoping this one's ours" Lol:)

All Time Low – Coffee Shop Soundtrack Lyrics 17 years ago
OK, so I know the song is about Alex having an affair with a married woman (uh-oh...), but the way I interpreted it (before seeing the interview on rockstarunderground) was like a guy whose always been kinda close to this girl, but for some reason they never got together (her friends thought he wasn't good enough or he was a player, but had a special something for her or idk, something like that). And she's currently in a fairly serious long-term relationship with some other guy, but her and the guy she "can't" be with are a little too close for her BF's taste. (so that's all the talk about her having her life in place and taking chances)
Then in the second verse where I imagined for some reason her guy friend and her bf got in like a bar fight or something more or less over her. She's there and breaks it up and dumps the other guy and gets with her guy friend.
So in the end "when it all came down" to it she realized that her guy friend was always loved her more than her actual bf and made her guy friend's "wasted youth" pining over her not-so wasted.
But, that night when they more or less get together they're both still a little hesitant about being together because no one else wants them to be together, but they want to, so in my imagination, they stayed together.
And how anybody could comepare ATL to FOB is beyond me. ATL has angelic harmonies while FOB gets really close to whiney a lot of the time. (I'm not one of those people who has it out for FOB - I have my share of songs by them on my iPod - but FOB doesn't even come close to ATL in my opinion)
Final comment - this is my favorite song... ever.

If it's about his brother committing suicide like everyone says, it sounds like he drove off and got drunk and THEN killed himself, with the talk of throwing bottles and breaking doors at the begining of the song.

That leaves me to picture a guy in guy's shoes or a guy in tiny, high-heeled girl shoes.
