| Tom Petty – Waiting For Tonight Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Can't believe this song isn't more popular, it's classic Petty. I interpret it as the character has been away for a long time, and it's about going back to visit a really special girl back home. Like maybe it's about touring and have all this fun and getting all the girls etc. but it really wearing him down and he just wants to be with someone who he feels is real and someone he has actual feelings for. But he's also scared and nervous and doesn't quite understand his relationship with her because she is so special. "I was wrestling with my overcoat, fighting with my thoughts" "If she hung around too long i might take her for granted" It's like because he's fallen for her so hard it makes the situation much more delicate and he's scared about messing it up. All the way through the song you a get the impression the character is just exhausted and worn down with life and all the tension and apprehension he has built up can just be released tonight when he sees this girl. "The only one who really cared about me, The only one without an angle" |

I think this song is about wanting to be loved and not wanting to be alone but also about how complicated love is and how he's not really sure what he wants. Perhaps he has ended a relationship with this girl or maybe she left him and the emptiness he feels in his life- "I can't please myself" These lines talk about the contradiction he feels and how he's not sure if he made the right decision; "I wanted to see you walking backwards And get the sensation of you coming home I wanted to see you walking away from me Without the sensation of you leaving me alone" He seems angry about his relationship and wanted her to leave but realizes this is impossible without feeling pain and emptiness himself. There seems a constant battle about whether he made a mistake in finishing the relationship and whether he wants her back or whether to move on "Maybe some day, i won't be so lonely" followed by the quite desperate "When are you coming home sweet angel?" The line "And i'll walk on water, every chance i get" could be referring to the impossible nature of a perfect relationship and needed to perform miracles in order to make it work. I like the the last verse is somewhat ambiguous; "I wish I was traveling on a freeway Beneath this graveyard western sky I'm gonna set fire to this city And out into the desert we're gonna ride" I feel it's certainly about moving on and leaving the past behind but It's not clear whether he is starting out alone, with the old girl or perhaps with a new love. I like this. Anyway, Counting Crows are amazing! x |
