He's dying. The first verse is a bit of self-abuse and then speaking of shedding his mortal form. His life was lived in sin, in a style that provoked others' emotions. He is redeemed in death, a penalty for his faults. He is curious as to what will become of him, and prays for the better possibilities. He is tired of waiting for the end, however, and longs for the darkness of either death (or Hell, it's not perfectly clear). BTW: Pathos - a style that has the power to evoke feelings. |

| The character the singer is acting as is dying, which turns out to be a relief, removing the torment of life, the stress and sorrow he felt. He describes death as a zestful rapture. He even goes so far as to say that "to live is to love pain", indicating the release upon death. | |
