| I understand that this song is based on the Bruce Springsteen song but I don't find it funny. Infact I'd go as far to say that its profoundly moving. It's about when Daniel enters the funeral home that Laurie is working in, having not seen her in years. He's singing with such joy about what appears on the outset to be death but he's actually singing with such happiness because he's so overjoyed at seeing her again. Such a simple event but it changed alot of things in his life. | |

| The fact he talks about 'crawling up your veins', i think it has a deeper meaning than just sex. The crawling inside her seems to have two meanings, a literal one which has been picked up on and a metaphorical one. Almost like he's crawling inside her mind and manipulating it to think about him in the way he wants her to. | |

zombie_gem i think you are correct and pansyisdabomb, i also have panic disorder and agree that this song very much relates to that. If this is written from the perspective of a band member i think it's probably from Dallas. All of his music, seems to suggest a feeling of anxiety, alienation and lonliness. |

I disagree with most people here. I think the song speaks of Max's temptations getting the better of him. I think the first few lines however describe his anxieties leading up to the completion of the record. The searching for blood in the salty sea suggests he is looking for sanity and companionship, someone real with substance. He then describes the sun beating down on his chest and back which i believe describes all of the anxieties and pressures placed upon his shoulders during the recording of the album. The looking for drugs is quite simply that- he has spoken before about self-medicating with drugs in order to eliviate his feelings of alienation and the pressures of the world which he seems to describe in the lines before. I think the whole south theme relates to temptation. He describes his red right hand (red implying danger) pointing him south which to me suggests his mind is telling him to go down the path of temptation, which to him means alcohol, drugs and sex (all of which are described later on in the song 'piss in my veins' and 'come pollinate me' for example). Following on from this, he describes the puke green clouds spitting him out. Green here suggesting the normal route as it were, the route void of temptation. He tells of them spitting him out which to me suggests that he has tried to take the normal path, being sober and void of temptation but this hasnt worked for him, it's just thrown him out into the cold world, confused and laid bare (no shoes reference). I hear 'come pollinate me' seems to be a sexual reference from his interior monologue and his side of temptation. Max has spoken before in interviews of being a sexaholic, another big temptation of his. The across the room i hope to watch you writhe again soon, suggests that his temptations have gotten the better of him and he intends to follow them from now on seeing as a normal route hasnt worked out for him (as was mentioned earlier). They've got the army of ears, they cant hear you now seems to be his interior monologue speaking to him again. To me this line suggests that he has completely buckled into temptation- all of his friends, family, fans can't see that he's breaking up inside and so he's dealing with it himself in a negative way that is damaging to him. Piss in my veins and these furrowed brows is how his temptations have taken hold of him- self medicating and becoming more and more sceptical of the world. You've got this one last chance to burn me, turn me down, if not i've got these last 12 bucks to spend on you, you can take me anywhere your sick mind wants to use yourself to fuel me using you. Here Max is clearly talking to a woman who seems to represent another temptation, here, sexual temptation. Max is talking to this person who represents this temptation and saying, you can reject me and send me back down the green path, if not then i'm going to give into you and let temptation take its course. Wow that was long, but i'm glad i got it out of my system! |
