| basically it saying that the speaker, is watching this person from a distance, and watching them without the person knowing, lets the speaker see through the persons disguise that everything is ok and that they arent hurting like they are. | |

No one here as mentioned this, so i dont know if you know, but My Last Breath was written about the 9/11 attacks. Amy and Ben have stated that its about a spirit, kind of lingering to say goodbye, knowing that they only have one breath left, and trying to get what they need to get out before they exhale. This is what I think the song is saying, and if you ask me, the second verse and bridge give the song the oompf. And just knowing what it's about in general gives the song a new meaning. "Hold on to me love You know I can't stay long All I wanted to say was I love you and I'm not afraid" This is simply the person dying saying for their loved ones to hold on to their memories, and not forget them, because the person is dying and wont get to see them again, he's just telling them that he lovs them and he's not afraid, because he knows that he'll be remembered and loved. "Can you hear me? Can you feel me in your arms" This is the spirit asking if the person can hear him, and if he can still feel him in their arms. "Holding my last breath Safe inside myself Are all my thoughts of you Sweet raptured light It ends here tonight." They're holding their last breath inside them, safe, until they can get what they need to say or think out. Asking themselves and the loved one if all the dying ones thoughts of the other are extatic, or joyful, and that it's going to end soon. "I'll miss the winter A world of fragile things Look for me in the white forest Hiding in a hollow tree" This is where I think the song gets most of it's oomph. The meaning to this verse is more cryptic than the rest of the song. They're saying that they'll miss thw inter, a time when everything's fragile, and beautiful. Everything glimmers. The hollow tree is an allusion to a coffin, and they're saying that if the person is missing them, to look for they're grave and that it'll will always be there to visit, even if the person isn’t. "Closing your eyes to disappear You pray your dreams will leave you here, But still you wake and know the truth - No one's there." The bridge is where the song gets the rest of its oompf. This is saying that you close your eyes, trying to go to a better place, and get away from the nightmare you're in, hoping you dreams will leave you, but then you open your eyes again to realise the truth that no one can help you, that this is the end. "Say goodnight, don't be afraid Calling me, holding me, as you fade to black." This, I think is coming from the perspective of the loved one. They're saying for the person dying to say goodbye, and not to be afrai because they know they'll be remembered and loved. It's saying that the one dying i using their last breath and last energy to hold on to the one they love and to call their name, even when they know they're dying "(Say goodnight) Holding my last breath (Don't be afraid) Safe inside myself (Holding me) Are my thoughts of you Sweet raptured light It ends here tonight." This part here is like the two spirits (the dying one and the loved one) are talking to each other. The last thing i want to say about the song is i like how they chose to fade it out. Not many of their songs fade, but i love how this one does. it shows how the person if slowly dying. I also love how the last line is "holding my last breath" and how it is faint, and then te song fades, it gives the illusion that the person took their last breath and then died. |
