| The Decemberists – O Valencia! Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Though it seems like a simple west side story-esque song at first glance, but I have to give The Decemberists more credit than that. I have to go with the video on this song. She wanted to "break away" and knew he loved her and would help her escape her family. It's obvious that he would do anything for her throughout the song. They plan to get away and get caught. She used him and ended up failing in her plan but the last thing she wants is to go back to her family and she has enough caring for the guy to not have him die for her desires, and so she takes the shot for him. (Or maybe she just got shot accidentally *shrug*). In the song (instead breaking his world apart with a letter denying her love as she did in the video) she tells him she loves him so he can at least have that and maybe even use it as fuel to avenge her fate on her family. Which is what he does in the video despite him finding that she never loved him and used him. And I think Valencia is a place, not a name, and could be anywhere. Though I do like the allusion to the Roman tale that someone mentioned. Also, I feel like this song is similiar to We Both Go Down Together because I think both are about guys proclaiming alot of love and devotions that the targets of their affection aren't as equally feeling. |

*ahem* *looks around* Agreed. If I could have one song for a theme song, it would be this song. |

One of my new favorite MBD songs. At the show, before the song, Adam said this song was about harpies. |

LOVE this song. My friend and I agree that the trumphet part is his final march to the electric chair and the feedback is the sound of the electric chair starting up. |

Me and my friend love MBD and we we're having debates about the album ever since it came out. After I listened to it a couple times, I thought that it had to be a prequel. The character in this album seems best suited to be the person with enough fortitude to shot the devil in the back. In the end of this song, he says "I'm headin' way south, Always heard the girls were pretty there, I got to find out." South, given the Western setting, has got to be Mexico. And the song ends with the beginning music of "The Devil in Mexico". I'm with AlexKuykendall, I want to find the interview to hear what Adam says. The guy is a genuis. |
