Other reason's people (and know I say, rightfully) think it is about her father: "Baby daughter on the road, You're wrapped up warm in daddy's coat And I can still see the cigarette's heat." Then he goes on to say how he wants to basically kill him...so that solves that. By the way...that line means that even though she's left her father (on the road), she's still wearing the cover/mistrust that he wrapped her in (daddy's coat). And then he compares it to cigarette heat. As in, she thinks she put the cigarette out (escaped from her father) and even though it's not burning anymore, the heat is still coming from it (what he did is still hurting her). |

I think the reason people think it's about her father is because of the line "Where's your mother?" and that has people thinking along the lines of parents. I don't think it matters who it is. This song is about trust; either way constantly using a metaphor of a closing door to symbolize shutting off trust from anyone (because she was raped earlier). Whoever is singing this song wants her to trust him and "let [him] through that door." But, even though she thinks she's gotten over the rape, she won't trust anybody because of what happened. So he wants her to go back and confront him so she can let go of her inhibitions and open the door again. |

This is about two people in a relationship but only one of them is in love with the other. The one that is in love starts to realize his partner is not, and tries to convince him/her to leave the person before the person gets hurt. "If you don't see it You can never walk away" is... If you don't realize you're not in love, you're not going to end the relationship "If you don't feel it It's going to get harder everyday" is... If you don't love me, it's going to be harder to leave me, the more this relationship develops "But you don't want love Keeping you awake at night 'Till you can sleep" is... But you don't want to have to deal with a break up, so you won't do it "Dear I feel that you've settled You've always pushed me in the shadow" is... Obvious. He feels like the person has settled and is neglecting him. "When you wake up alone Do you love me still?" is... Probably the best line. Meaning...when you wake up without me, do you still love me, or do you only "love" me when I'm around because that's how you think you should feel. "Do you wake up at all?" is... Also a great line. Do you ever stop pretending to yourself that you love me? |
