At the concert the other night Evan said this song was about getting in a fist fight with a skinhead. Which... is pretty hilarious considering how the song goes. |

Arghhh how are there no comments on this? It's March, and I hate that because I won't have a good excuse to listen to Christmas-themed music for at least 8 more months. But I'll do it anyways =) This song is just so perfect for when you're missing someone, and you know you're not a great person but you just want to be back with them because they make everything better. |

I can't figure out why I love this song so much, probably best out of all of their songs. Something about the driving tick of the metronome forming perfect percussion. The lyrics are far from linear, but the way he delivers them leave lines like "we'll stick it to a city we can call home eventually" running through my head all day. |

I must admit I'm kind of interested in the Santa Barbara connection, since I'm from that area. I can't think of a Telegraph Road anywhere around here, but there's a Tropicana Apartments just outside of town.
edit: Oh looks like there is a Telegraph Road in Ventura just south of Santa Barbara... |

Just a note on the phrase "Throwing punches at ocean waves":
Think of the motion one makes when swimming the breast stroke. You're basically punching forward with every stroke. I like that image of a lone swimmer, in his mind, punching off into the sea. |

I have to point out that it doesn't sound like it ends with "mint car-"
I hear "mint caramel", as in caramel mint liquor perhaps? It would fit the situation well enough. |

I don't really see drugs anywhere in the song, aside from the entrepreneur line, and even that just seems to be a reference to the fact that things aren't the way they used to be.
The first line is the easiest part to understand, just picture what he describes: A girl, fallen to her knees with a crooked halo and the feathers that used to be her wings lying all around her while she cries. And the guy just sees this scene and says "it's fine, you do this all the time".
The other really clear part of the song is in the chorus, always chewing up and not saying the words he really means. Things just haven't really worked out, but it's just kinda dragging on from habit, thus the refrain. |

Haha, did anyone else get the Google ads for Louisiana tourism information around this? I find that hilarious. But I love the epic story style of all their songs. I'm still trying to figure out if there's something deeper in this one though... |
