Syd Barrett – Long Gone Lyrics 4 years ago
I think it’s about Syd having lost either his muse and his mental stability/equilibrium.

Having lost his ability to create music in the way he wanted and being unable to express himself.

The particular lyric that seems to be the most difficult to interpret is:

“She was gone, gone, the bigger they come
The larger her hand 'til no one understands
Why for so long she'd been gone.”

He’s saying that the greater the influence or part that the muse/artistic inspiration plays in someone’s life, the harder it is for others to appreciate the impact and severity of that loss.

And also the path that led to losing that spark, which in Syd’s case was his slow mental decline which undoubtedly started long before he showed outward signs of it.

Just my opinion.

And, the lyric is not “goo goo eyes”, it’s “eager eyes”, as stated. Good lord.

Billy Joe Royal – Cherry Hill Park Lyrics 4 years ago
Actually, Cherry Hill Park is very close to Pennsylvania, just across the border in New Jersey,

Billy Joe Royal already had the idea and sketch for the song when on tour and was going through Pennsylvania. He saw a sign for the park when he was passing into New Jersey and finalized the lyrics shortly afterwards.

The song has ZERO to do with the frankly ridiculous scenario posted earlier.

Blue Öyster Cult – She's As Beautiful As A Foot Lyrics 5 years ago
davidcsmith Is pretty close but what I have read is that the band was getting fed up with Braunstead’s faux Morrison/Lizard King antics. So, they wrote it to try to embarrass him and tried to make the lyrics as ridiculous as possible, but to their chagrin, it became a popular number with audiences and basically backfired.
Or as one might say: “And the joke’s on you...”

Guided by Voices – Gleemer (The Deeds of Fertile Jim) Lyrics 6 years ago
Impressionistic lyrics as usual. Sprout and Pollard are both oblique lyricists. Bittersweet, melancholic, but usually an underlying sense of hope lifts the spirit.

King Crimson – Islands Lyrics 10 years ago
Possibly Peter Sinfield's finest lyrical turn.
The individual and the universal are shown to be connected through ritual, symbolism, myth, nature, language, the arts, but most of all....love.

Islands is possibly the most divisive and polarizing album in the KC catalog, because the emphasis is more on feel rather than pure technique.
Never before and never since, would the band visit a place this tranquil and open.
Somehow, melancholy sits alongside sun flecked innocence, and a darkened sky illuminates a sandy shore.

The Zombies – Hung Up On A Dream Lyrics 17 years ago
I just found this site while looking for the lyrics to this song. Very cool! This is my first post...

I suppose I should preface this by mentioning that this is probably my favorite Zombies' song. I love the sentiments expressed, the composition, arrangements, the liberal use of mellotron and the vocals are sublime.

I guess my feelings are similar to those of Durang0 in the mentioning of the nature of ideals.

To me, in more specific terms, I think it also alludes to the nature of what Maslow described as "peak experiences". In his book Religious Aspects of Peak-Experiences (1970), he mentions: "feelings of limitless horizons opening up to the vision, the feeling of being simultaneously more powerful and also more helpless than one ever was before, the feeling of great ecstasy and wonder and awe, and the loss of placing in time and space".

We can all probably recall moments when an experience seemed to be perfect...a time when it seemed our place in the universe was that of harmonious and total integration. Unsurprisingly, for the composers of this song, certain musics provided this sensation.
Often, we'll go to that same place, listen to that same piece of music, et al, and try to duplicate and recapture that moment of transcendence and find that generally, it can't be done.

However, it doesn't mean that there aren't other equally exquisite moments waiting for us...I hope.
