Wow! Nobody has commented on this GREAT song. I don't know why but songs that have to do with sleep are always good. TheSmiths-Asleep DefianceOhio-Lullabies DefianceOhio-GrandmaSong ThePostalService-TheDistrictSleepsAloneTonight TheShins-SleepingLessons I have heard a decent number of songs by The Notwist, maybe about 15 or 20, and this one is my favorite. When he is saying "someone has sleep for me." maybe he is wondering if somebody is thinking about him, because that's what most people do before they sleep (and as they sleep, even if they don't remember it). "or is it all just letters and poems." Maybe he is writing poems about someone, maybe someone specific or just anyone who happens to be thinking of him, and he is not sure if someone (or that specific person) is really thinking about him. |

I had another idea. somebody said that they couldn't beleive we were actually disecting the song line for line. "COle and Macey lost their eyes on the finer points." Maybe that line is about how one interprets this song! |

I commented on this a few weeks ago, well I tried to, but I accidentally replied to someone, not to this song. I am new to this. I love this song because it sounds so different than most music, when you hear something that sounds like most other music it usually conveys less feeling. "you may notice certain things before you die." In dream interpreting death often symbolizes change. "mail them to me should they cause your algebra to fail." This could mean if he doesn't understand the new feelings, impulses, or whatever they are, then he will "mail them to" himself (as in a certain part of himself, like a specific function or level of the mind) to figure it out. "cole and macey lost their eyes on the finer points roll them up in coffee cake and dine." Maybe eating Cole and Macey is abolishing an old way of thinking (the way of thinking being Cole and Macey) |

I love this song! For some reason I just love all of the strange disturbing thoughts that stuff like this bring up! In dream interpereting death usually symbolizes change. Maybe it's about uncovering new desires that you didn't know you had. Maybe thats what he means by your algebra failing, it's realizing the way you thought you worked was a false perception. Maybe Cole and Mayce symbolize what he used to be. Eating them may symbolize looking at the past feelings, perceptions, or whatever, and abolishing them. Maybe the part "mail them to me" is supposed to be a transaction between two parts of himself. Like when the subconscious connects with conscious mind. |

I think Reckoner is supposed to be a higher power, like God. I think in the first part he is speaking of abandoning some sort of pleasure to find something better. "Can't take it with you, disavow the pleasure." In the second part he is saying how you cannot blame the Reckoner for when you give into temptation. Often temptation comes with a down-side, making it bittersweet. "You are not to blame for bittersweet distractors." I think in the third part he is saying that when he separates from Reckoner everything he feels is the same, none of it has any depth. "Because we seperate it ripples on a plain shore." The part "Dedicated to all your needs." would be pretty straight forward if you agree that Reckoner is some higher power. |
