| I think the first part of the song is a message to Hitler. Although, highly unlikely to be true, wasn't there a rumour about Hitler and his cousin pooping on his chest? And after having done some research about Hitler's parents, his mother was a house wife and lived the sort of life you could today call a "trailer park" kind of life. And his father was a philanderer, and the very impersonal term 'made fetuses' I think expresses the contempt Jeff holds for this man. I also think the very beginning of the song is about Jeff imagining killing Hitler, the man responsible for taking away Anne Frank, the girl he cares very much for, which is what the second part of the song is about. | |

I went to see counting crows play a concert the other day, in which they played this song. And as the intro started Adam told the audience what the song meant to him. He said that he was saw a magazine with a pretty actress on the front who had been recently divorced and that it said Adam was her new boyfriend. Which made him wish he had met her before. So he thought about what she must be going through and what it must feel like to have the press make up lies about your personal life for other people's entertainment. And he wished he could talk to her, not that he would be the best person to talk to or that he would know what to say but just to talk to her as he knows how it feels to be isolated. That's what he said anyway. Make of it what you will... |
