When I heard this song for the first time I immediately thought of magazines. Especially the more obvious tabloid-like ones (Enquirer, etc) where the material is more like a newspaper. You get ink stuck on your fingers... Take the poison of your age Don't like your fingers when you turn the page Neon - advertisements, commercialization, etc Bible - taking something to be true without question |

I was listening to this song again today. At first I believed it to be about the transition from a soon-to-be father to actual parenthood. How wrong was I? Then I noticed all the caged bird references and part of the mocking bird lullaby. If you don't perform for me, then I won't show you any love. I knew I disliked that song for a reason. |

Come to think of it, it does remind me of Johnny Appleseed. I don't know Régine's history, but I wonder if 'wounded mother I'll never see' refers to her actual mother or Haiti. |

I don't think the part about snuffing and shrugging it off before his mom comes into his room is about masturbation. The 'it' seems to be love itself or his hurt feelings because of it. I'm assuming the speaker is a guy, so I think he's burying his hurt for his mom's sake (probably so she won't ask any questions). All in all, I think this person is really in love with being in love, and that's why "the name keeps changing" and he sees beautiful flowers growing when a relationship has ended. As for the fast paced music, that's still confusing to me. It still has a bit of a sad twang to it, but happy at the same time. Sad because he still has no one, but he's on the road to recovery? He's crazy, but happy he knows his problem? I don't know. |
