M.I.A. – Fire Fire Lyrics 15 years ago
For years I have been hearing "jacking off to Lou Reed" and even singing along! It was one of my favorite lines of hers! "Laying low and jacking off to Lou Reed"...yeah...damn.

Beirut – Elephant Gun Lyrics 16 years ago
Elephants are such wonderful imagery/metaphor. This makes me think of the "elephant in the room" - something everyone knows exists but refuses to discuss. To me, the song is about someone stuck in the routine of their town and everyday life but they go on ignoring their unhappiness which is the "elephant in the room" until sometimes it's just overwhelming. It's like trying to ignore, shoot down, shoo away that sneaking suspicion that one is unescapably unhappy just to make everyday life bearable.

Erykah Badu – Telephone Lyrics 17 years ago
Actually I think it was written after Erykah has been talking to J Dilla's mother after his death. His mom says that in his last days, Dilla was going in and out of consciousness and he was having conversations with different people no one else could see, including ODB who gave him directions for the afterlife. So I guess it is meant to be an ode to both ODB and J Dilla in that way, but it was written a day after Dilla's funeral. I think towerykr's interpretation is also very apt and that there is a universal message here of losing a loved one but the idea that there are spiritual guides to the afterlife.

The Airborne Toxic Event – Papillon Lyrics 17 years ago
one of my favorites of theirs. i think a lot of this album has to do with loneliness and feeling isolated and disconnected from everyone, even those you care about. it's about the disconnect between how one really feels and the act being put on - the frusteration of a disingenuous world and the tiresomeness of getting lost in drugs and drinking and meaningless sex to replace real feelings and emotion. i just love the sarcasm and hurt in his voice when he sings "i've been just fine" then screaming "if i wasn't such a mess" is just great. i'm not sure what 'papillon' refers to exactly but it does mean butterfly in french and i find some nice imagery there - he is grasping at this fleeting, fragile beauty which doesn't want to be caught.

Eddie Vedder – Guaranteed Lyrics 17 years ago
I have really enjoyed reading everyone's comments! I have spent a lot of time thinking about Chris and his philosophy. This song, as some of you stated, perfectly embodies Chris's yearning to escape society and materialism, to be closer to and finally become one with ‘nature’.

But what REALLY moves me about this song is that it also manages to touch on the one glitch in Chris's philosophy, the missing link he did not understand until, devastatingly, the end of his life: happiness is only real when shared. The comments here have overlooked the fact that while Chris's life philosophy has MANY admirable aspects which we should all learn from, he was deeply troubled especially when it came to forming meaningful relationships of any kind. Chris managed to accomplish more than so many in his life by shedding material possessions and breaking free of society’s expectations; HOWEVER he pulled away from everyone who cared for him.
“Don't come closer or I'll have to go, Holding me like gravity are places that pull. If ever there was someone to keep me at home, It would be you...” Now THAT is the most moving and poignant part to me. It could be directed at any one of the numerous people in Chris’s life that loved him and who he could have loved but shut out. Refuge can be found in nature, but without sharing the journey and sharing life with others (family, friends and lovers), something is missing. I wish I could get this message across to someone I love who is just like Chris in so many ways.

Jolie Holland – Do You Lyrics 17 years ago
LOVE this song. her voice is so real. i can definitely relate these lyrics to my life right now. i think it's about being in love with someone and you know you should be together but the other person isn't ready or is maybe scared (this doesn't have to be the case but it fits for my situation haha). so he stops answering calls and she knows it's ending, but she also knows life goes on. i can really feel her frusteration!
