Iron & Wine – Resurrection Fern Lyrics 17 years ago
In our days we will live
Like our ghosts will live:
Pitching glass at the cornfield crows
And folding clothes
[going about their daily lives doing mindless things, but at the same time, they will live freely as they choose to do]

Like stubborn boys across the road
We'll keep everything:
Grandma's gun and the black bear claw
That took her dog
[keeping memories of things past, especially fond ones, like childhood. not only memories, but it could also mean physical objects that recall happier times.]

When Sister Lowery says, "Amen"
We won't hear anything:
The ten-car trains will take that word
That fledgling bird
[getting married and then starting their lives together, leaving home. being able to leave somewhere that you've always dreamed of getting away from.]

And the fallen house across the way
It'll keep everything:
The baby's breath
Our bravery wasted and our shame
[they've left home but the house is still there with their childhood memories kept perfect like it they remember it. the land is still the same and when you grow up, you have no fears, and also make a lot of mistakes]

And we'll undress beside the ashes of the fire
Both our tender bellies wound in baling wire
All the more a pair of underwater pearls
Than the oak tree and its resurrection fern
[the first time they've made love, and it's special. they probably lost their virginities on that old farm. they also gave up the farm area for something greater, such as city living, that is new and exotic. something unfamiliar to them unlike their upbringing]

In our days we will say
What our ghosts will say:
We gave the world what it saw fit
And what'd we get?
[they gave up the lifestyle their family chose to pursue greater things. the bigger question at the end of their lives is "was it really worth it?"]

Like stubborn boys with big green eyes
We'll see everything:
In the timid shade of the autumn leaves
And the buzzard's wing
[they did something no one close to them would have dreamed of. they saw the world and got out of that old town. but sometimes coming home enables you to see things in a new perspective. maybe it wasn't so bad at home after all. sometimes you can't realize that until you've been away for a while]

And we'll undress beside the ashes of the fire
Our tender bellies are wound around in baling wire
All the more a pair of underwater pearls
Than the oak tree and its resurrection fern
[they undress themselves to be vulnerable to something other than what they've known. in the end, they are still in it together, even if it wasn't the best decision, but that's just a part of growing up and life]

this is my favorite iron & wine song. it's even more powerful in concert and the band couldn't have been any nicer to talk with!
