Electrelane – The Deed Lyrics 16 years ago
Death of God? In this case... I don't think so. This is so much taken out of context. if you are talking about "the deed" and if the text is German, and, most important, if it is by Friedrich Nietzsche, it is most likely about this thing called Holocaust that happened some decades ago. "Sie". They. Or rather us, the Germans. "Die Tat", "this deed", the holocaust. This deed should be distant from us, the nation that is known as "the land of poets and thinkers". And yet, it happened.

Regina Spektor – Daniel Cowman Lyrics 17 years ago
p4int3rchik i right wit the sarcasm. But heroin boy is right: He has a reason for killing himself. It's his death sentence that kills him. He is dying because he was supposed to hang. So he dies by hanging (or the incurable illness for which "hanging" is a metaphor).

Regina Spektor – Daniel Cowman Lyrics 17 years ago
Love this song. One of the best by Regina Spektor. What a coincidence that I'm reading "L'étranger" right now. But I don't believe that it's got to do sth. with the novel, but still I think it's a great interpretation. Possible. This reminds me rather of Kafka. The lyrics could really be written by him. His stories and novels are full of processes and obscure death sentences. And most of his texts cannot be interpreted, simply because they don't just mean one thing, even though they are full of hints. These lyrics are simply surreal. I'd suggest that it deals with death in an abstract way. Couldn't the "Death Sentence" be the announcement of his soon death because of an illness and in the end he remembers stuff like heroin boy and the gin ladies, but all somehow mixed up. The song ends abruptly in the harmonical middle of nowhere, just one chord away from where it should be (at least to my ears). Maybe like Daniel Cowmans life, that has been left unfinished? He obviously didn't find peace, no matter wether he killed himself or died from an incurable disease. OR was executed. Maybe the song is about destiny. Maybe it critizes death penalty. Maybe it's about how we try to forget death and how it will get all of us - one day, somehow. maybe it's about some strange afterlife. Only Regina knows...

Amanda Palmer – Strength Through Music Lyrics 17 years ago
Saw her perform this in Hamburg one week ago, she said that in America everyone just talked about the guns, that everyone said they should be forbidden in order to prevent massacres, but to her the question why children shoot children, what drives them to do these awful things (the society?) was more important.
"Strength through Music" could be a referrence to Nazi-Germany, where "Kraft durch Freude" (Strength through Joy) was an organization that provided free vacation for the NSDAP party members. Is she talking about evil nazi music? (coming from Germany, this was the first I thought about) The Strindberg extract
refers to his "inferno crisis". In that time, Strindberg was mentally ill and tried to turn iron to gold. This might be the topic, mental illnesses that make children or young adults shoot each other. How stupid, only aggressive music (please don't blame Marylin Manson!) and video games and the relaxed attitude towards weapons in the American society were the reasons for a massacre. Boom, the time bomb explodes in the end. A nice and simple message, simply arranged. Ein Meisterwerk. At least that is what it feels like to me.

Arcade Fire – No Cars Go Lyrics 17 years ago
I think that the simplest meaning often is the most logical one and also quite often true. Maybe they just mean a plsce where no cars go. A place where an alternative lifestyle as H. D. Thoreau described it ist still possible. Where you can just turn off the lights and sleep without being interrupted by a sonic broom. Some kind of Paradise lost. But all of the people that want to experience the peace destroy this place (the end). The fromtier theorie extended and fit into our modern lifes. But maybe this isn't really simple anymore, so I'm going to stop here.
