Amanda Palmer – Trout Heart Replica Lyrics 15 years ago
when she says "feed them details, feed them emails, they'll eventually grow" she's talking about HUMAN HEARTS not about trouts.

if you tell them what these animals have to suffer you'd think they should grow and they'd understand, right?... but it's not working..

Amanda Palmer – Trout Heart Replica Lyrics 15 years ago
If you actually knew how to read, you'd get the perfect answer to all your senseless rant in Amanda's song;

"I won't keep what I can't catch with my both hands without a net". Really, the cat does catch the mice, do you ever kill anything with your own strenght? Would you be able to do it, physically? Would you be able to take the psychological pain of doing so?

More than that, the problem in consuming animals isn't killing. "Killing things is not so hard, it's hurting that's the hardest part". Ok, even if you kill the fucking trout, why make it live in a trout farm instead of its natural habitat? In a crowded, unnatural space where all they do is circling in a stressful state, and then choking when someone decides it with a move of his hand, so easily, without ever thinking of what he's actually doing.

People tend to ignore the whole story and just think of the piece of meat on their plate, and not about the life it had before, and the lives and deaths millions of animals are having to make that happen. Amanda notices, but she doesn't want to know. When she realizes it's already too late and she already knows, she asks for a smaller heart to be able to just ignore it, instead of doing something about it. It's easier, it doesn't hurt, but it doesn't mean it's the right thing.

Suede – By The Sea Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm a lot more pessimistic than you guys.

"He can walk out anytime,
Anytime he wants to walk out, that's fine,
He can walk out anytime,
Across the sand, into the sea, into the brine"

To me, this means he leaves his known life to a life in which he doesn't have any responsibilities, he can enjoy himself, and when he wants to die, he'll have the sea right next to him. He could have children and make a new life right by the sea, trying to keep dreaming, or he could kill himself if he "touches the ground".

it IS "JUST SEE", you can hear it clearly on live videos and if you read her lips.

Cat Power – Nude as the News Lyrics 15 years ago
i thought that stanza was clearly about the fetus.. the flame gun being the "plan b", abortion.
then it says "there's a big man leading US into temptation", so it would make sense the other half of "us" is her baby, and actually the "big man" is her partner. and though he's the big and powerful one, when it comes to her body it's her decision, that's why the roles are reversed.

I always thought she said "Jackson, just see" or "Jackson, ya' see", it makes more sense actually.

Amanda Palmer – Straight Lyrics 15 years ago
this is kind of like "first orgasm"; not having the energy to spend to maintain personal relationships with people and just drifting away..
Lack of time seems to be a common excuse to these two songs; reality, though, shows it's simply fear to face the world, spend something on it and then losing, fear of being let down.
Why would you bother? you can "take matters into your own hands" as in first orgasm, or wait for someone to do someone to get you out of that state. This song is, then, fairly more optimistic, as she assumes there is actually a way to save her from that numb comfort and she assumes that she needs others, but she still doesn't have the will to start the change that must take place in her life.

Amanda Palmer – Blake Says Lyrics 15 years ago
If you did your research you'd know who Blake is! He's awesome btw. An angel living statue, painter, he worked in an aquarium (hence the reference to fishes and staying underwater.. he used to have that info on somewhere but took it off a couple of months ago)..

More Blake links:
http://twitter.com/electroblake
http://www.blakebrasher.org/about/

Now besides all that and the velvet underground quotes, the concept is basically that he's grown cold and apart from the world and human emotions, only showing those emotions to his fish according to the song. It's not that he's miserable, he simply doesn't feel, he's not there (and she considers that to be sad). The globe getting warmer means he could have all the warmth and her love ("though he said he would be mine"...) if he wanted to, but he stays in "Alaska", in his own frozen little world in which not much happens.

Who couldn't feel related to this song? I just love it and even though it's pretty simple, it will remain one of my favourite.

PJ Harvey – The Piano Lyrics 16 years ago
After listening to this song for a while i thought:

Nobody's listening to the piano. She's trying to call for attention in pain, trying to make herself heard. She plays the piano almost in trance.

"Hit her with a hammer, Teeth smashed in. Red tongues twitching, Look inside a skeleton".. Sounds almost as if someone was raped at home, and she, as a kid, was the one who watched it. But this is the most uncertain part of the song to me.

"My fingers sting where I feel your fingers have been" her fingers are literally her fingers.. "your" fingers are the piano keys

"Ghostly fingers moving my limbs" She plays the piano in a trance, she's not completely conscious of what she's playing. The piano plays her, more than she plays the piano.

Then, nobody's listening is self-explainatory. "Dad is in the corner rattling his keys" while "mom is in the doorway trying to leave", they're shocked by the scene. Daddy is in the corner.. which corner? it must be the corner of the room in which she's playing the piano, or else it wouldn't say "the corner" as if it was obvious. Then mom is behind her dad, she tries to escape.

The mistery is.. what happened? WHO is she missing?

Blonde Redhead – Spring And By Summer Fall Lyrics 16 years ago
Looks like someone who completely lost himself for another person, a lover (for the "clashing lies and clashing thighs" stanza).. He completely lives through her, and is absorving in every possible way.

"I've been watching you spring by summer fall when some one called" --> he's been absolutely obsessed about for quite a while.

Blonde Redhead – 23 Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it must be about the 23 enigma, and this person has the potential of changing his life for good or bad, as in "he is a son of god" but he's also "son of a gun" (hey I'm not trying to be religious in this one, i'm actually atheist)... In 23 seconds he can see all he loves die, change the name of love, change his life..

It seems like this guy dies, I can say this from the beggining "23 seconds, all things we love will die" and she calls him "my love".. Then she speaks of him in a past tense, he WAS son of a gun.. etc.

Blonde Redhead – This Is Not Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is quite autobiographical. (It's funny no one pointed that out!)

"her" seems to be Kazu, she's talking about herself. She went to the other side of the world (New York) because of someone else, and then she met Amedeo and Simone (you and your brother).. Then she fell in love. The rest of the story is pretty self-explainatory.

I love the second half of the lyrics. She's saying "ok, I came from the other side of the world, cos' I thought I was free. It's so pathetic! Life is like a dream, a series of meaningless movemets.. or were they actually meaningful?"

I love it. I actually love the lyrics a lot more than the music itself.

A Perfect Circle – The Outsider Lyrics 17 years ago
it's called "the outsider" because this is the way an outsider would see her attitude. it's all from the outsider's point of view, which doesn't mean that this girl or person really IS like that.

Amanda Palmer – Another Year [2004 version] Lyrics 17 years ago
I laughed out loud with the end of this song (ok, it's depressing, but I thought it to be the most sarcastic depressive ending for a song).. It's like 'ok, we have hundreds of years to waste, but maybe I want it to end sooner, i'd rather lose my time destroying myself than losing than doing nothing'

watch this and you'll get the "other girls shower but I give out flowers to curious strangers who throw dollars at my feet" part

(:

By the way, I've read some comments (i don't know if it was in this song or not) in which some people said like "oooh she doesn't shower!!".. come on, shower as in bride showers. she's not that kind of bride; she's a living statue acting as a bride. the perfect bride thing doesn't fit her, the glass slipper doesn't fit her.

The Dresden Dolls – Glass Slipper Lyrics 17 years ago
To me, this song is about the same as The Perfect Fit. (I know someone pointed it out, but I haven't read all the comments so I dunno if someone else said what I'm about to say.)

She's going out with "the prince", a man she wants. But unfortunately, she thinks she's not the one for him, the perfect cinderella. The glass slipper doesn't fit her.

"it gets tricky dont be picky if the slipper fits you wear it whore" ----> this means that if she can "wear the slipper", she'll be ok. She might not be the one but she can pretend she is.

"how many minutes until midnight and you get your eyesight back" ---> she knows than at midnight the prince will discover that she's not the one for him, he'll get his eyesight back and discover that the glass slipper doesn't fit her.

"other girls shower but i give out flowers to curious strangers who throw dollars at my feet" ---> This reminds me of the perfect fit, "I can paint my face and stand very, very still, it's not very practical but it still pays the bills". She's not a princess, she's a different girl. And it becomes noticeable throughout the night. But the prince is still blind, until midnight.

"how many strips until it hits me and my big mouth strikes again" She knows that she will ruin it. She can't pretend to be perfect cos' she isn't.

"i'm too sore from fitting exactly to ride into setting suns aching to stand on my own two feet" ---> She doesn't feel comfortable pretending. It's just like trying to make her feet fit in glass slippers, it hurts, and sometime she'll no longer resist it. She can't pretend. Just like in "its exhausting to keep smiling when your toes are bleeding through the floor".

"how many wishes do i still have left to fix the way it ends" ---> She still wants it to have a happy ending, she's wishing to have the opportunity to fit in those shoes forever, I mean, to be the perfect princess for the prince.

"how many princes will it take to put a girl like this back together again" ---> Reminds me of the perfect fit: "Can't you just fix it for me, It's gone berserk". She needs her heart to be put together again after it was broken. Until then, she can't love or be loved properly.

"how many instances can you point out where i was less than kind" ---> He already found out that she's not as girly and perfect as she pretended to be, sometimes she's less than kind.

"how many happy endings do you need to change your fucking mind" ---> Even though everything seems perfect, she's always thinking that the prince will discover her secret and find that she's not who he thinks she is, that she's less than kind, that she might have other men, etc.

"and how much time do we have left before it's midnight and you see that i was never the right size?" ---> This is to confirm the rest of the song; she knows that he'll discover her, and she's always waiting for that time. She's always afraid to be in a relationship because she knows it will always fail, because she's broken, she's less than kind, she's not a girl suitable for a prince. Reminds me of the last phrase in the perfect fit: "Hello, I'm good for nothing; will you love me just the same?" She still hopes someone to consider her, even though she thinks poorly of herself and thinks that it's almost imposible to love a girl like her.

The Dresden Dolls – Coin-Operated Boy Lyrics 17 years ago
It says "will you keep on trying to prove it?
i'm dying to lose it,
**i'm losing my confidence**
i want it
(...)"

Why is the phrase between ** missing?? =O

This song clearly shows us a girl who can't love a real man, because she thinks they'll abandon her someday. But a coin-operated boy won't; he's good in the bed, she can do anything with him, he's kind of a perfect, loyal man. She doesn't feel able to love because she fears not to be loved back and suffer.

Buy me a coin-operated boy!

I love it. And I agree with the teacher's theory. And I hadn't paid too much attention to the sounds in the song! You're right Shaine, good job :)
