I see this more broadly as life and loss. I think there are 2 different scenarios... the first part being a breakup.. the pain of losing a lover. Then life keeps coming.. all the things that are ordinary still exist.. work, coffee, etc.. All the things that never stand still after a personal loss. He gets married and his wife has a baby that dies.. and the feeling is pretty much the same.. Dealing with it.. I almost get the sense of the pause that occurs at the first instant of a loss is comforting in the sense that life does take a momentary breath. |

I think the 'I sure hope thats it' refers to her wanting him and hoping its b-c its real love rather than her being damaged and unable to let go b-c he is so addictingly bad. |

Tristan says this is about that feeling where when someone breaks up with you, you always want them back.. then at some point you realize that you were essentially the one who broke up with them.. and that you start kicking yourself for getting the ball rolling again. I take it from there to mean that you broke up with them for not acting right, but it feesl like they were breaking up with you b-c all they had to do was act right and you'd have stayed. They didnt think it was worth it to try,.. and its easy to think you can change their mind if you take it personally that they must not have cared enough or they'd have tried... So you can get them back, but you cant make them a better person. Usually they just wouldnt try for anyone.. so its a bit confusing, but I see it a lot.. |

to me it is a song about a girl (the girl who certain men idealize although she is quite often more pure, and therefore very different than they) and the guy who loves her becasue she is everything he thinks he wants, but he cant make up his mind between his dark side (alcoholism, depression, etc) as well as the fun involved in these dark acts, and her. so he knows he doesnt know what he wants.. but that doesnt stop him from selfishly going back and forth between that life and her. even though he knows it breaks her heart every time. |

I feel like "american aquarium drinker" gives the feeling of just an average guy at some shitty hole in the wall bar... like a fish in an aquarium b-c isnt that very american... to an outside observer people in a bar seem like fish in an aquarium.. but its more than that .. almost seems to have a bitter tinge.. |

to me she is singing tow sides of a relationship.. the guy feels like he can never please her so he pulls away.. but hs should let go b-c life is too short the second verse is her trying to please him after he has pulled away, and realizing its all in vain.. giving up, then him coming back..but its too late b-c she has changed her mind already isn't that the way it always is? |
