The Mamas & the Papas – California Dreamin' Lyrics 16 years ago
It is a hippie song (think about the time period..):

It's about Vietnam. That's the long cold winter. The President is the preacher. Young men HAD to serve, even though a lot were antiwar ("pretend to pray").

California is a symbol of optimism. It's pretty much always sunny here. Tons of families moved to California after WWII too.

The Human Abstract – A Violent Strike Lyrics 17 years ago
Woot. love this song and I love the story.

It's pretty direct, there really isn't a need to talk about what it means. If you wanna think, look up The Mars Volta. great band

The Mars Volta – Meccamputechture Lyrics 17 years ago
Hm...the first time I heard the line "It lacks a human pulse," I thought:

-If it's a human saying this, then he might be suggesting that humans are different and everything is inferior to us because they "lack a human pulse," which might just mean like a human brain/reason. Which IS the mentality of us: we are better because we have reason and intelligence. (I don't necessarily agree with this mentality, but whatever.)

-But if it's someone/something from outside looking in on the human race, then it might suggest that we are the same as regular animals. Maybe technology, war, crime, whatever, is making us recede. The more we create, the more chance we have of destroying ourselves, so is the world really as safe as we think? Anyway...so this might imply that maybe we've lost touch (with what I don't know; these are just my first thoughts upon hearing this line) and are only contributing to our own demise. Aren't we supposed to use our intelligence/reason/whatever you want to call it for good like peace and shit? And what does it mean to be human anyway? There really is no such thing as a "human pulse," so maybe we are just the same as regular animals. Like, why do we have to distinguish and separate ourselves?

-Or, overall, maybe thinking we are better than all other species makes us more animalistic in a way. Make sense at all?

It's hard to explain what I'm thinking. And I'm just talking about that one line, not the whole song or album. Some of what I said/typed might not make any sense at all, but...I'm just throwing a few ideas out there.

One of my favorite Volta songs for sure. Day of the Baphomets is an amazing one too. But this album is by far one of the more complex and confusing. Maybe we're looking too hard to find an answer.
