I really doubt its about contemporary politics. More about the model of life itself. Very few get lucky enough to have all the causality fall into their favor. Its awful for most but really good for some. ;-) |

More housing developments go up Named after the things they replace So welcome to Minnow Brook And welcome to Shady Space And it all seems a little abrupt Anyone that lives in Jersey can attest to the truth of this. |

I worked in a hospital for a year and the line.. "Amongst the vending machines and year-old magazines In a place where we only say goodbye It stung like a violent wind that our memories depend On a faulty camera in our minds But I knew that you were a truth I would rather lose than to have never lain beside at all And I looked around at all the eyes on the ground As the TV entertained itself? is absolutely perfect. Brought back a lot of bad memories. |

I think this is yet another song critical of organized religion. The initial part is more composed, talking about the clear cycle of life and how, if a god did exist, is not perfect, nor malevolent. The verse: "Who the hell made you the boss? If you say what to do, I know what not to stop" (Religion often gives horrible advice for its practitioners to follow) "If you were the ship who would ever get on?" (If people who had never known about the bible read it, who would ever think its something to ascribe their lives to) "The weather changed and for the worse It came down on us like it had been rehearsed" (Religion as of late has gotten to a flash point. Many are dying around the world due to religious war. People react immediately to any theological threat to their beliefs almost like its been rehearsed for years) "Not like you hoped, but change will surely come And be awful for most, but really good for some" (A continuation of that thought, Those directing the flock get massive benefit while the flock itself suffers) "I took a trip to the exact same spot" (Born from minerals, reduced to minerals) "We'd pulled the trigger, but we forgot to cock And every single shot" (Cocking a gun is the proper step taken before taking a shot, which is the ultimate conclusion. Religious individuals have pulled the trigger without cocking, they have made a giant conclusion without thinking.) My favorite part of the song is after all his points against the idea of a benevolent god, he just says "Awww fuck it I guess we lost" The last half of the song just keeps saying, almost mockingly, that you will die and be reduced to your base elements to be used by some other carbon based life form. Amazing song. |

Meddle, Reason does a hell of a lot more to explain our universe than religious dogma. Isaac is highly critical of organized religion and says he is "Not religious at all". If you want to see how reason and science explain our universe read "Origin of Species" or any of the Richard Dawkins books. |

| Modest Mouse – Gravity Rides Everything Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Its about natural order. All the little details of your life will eventually succumb to a never ending cycle, your material will fall apart, and gravity will pull you back into the sphere. =) | |

Interesting thing too, if you play the melody that takes up most of the end of the song, it forms a circle on your guitar head. kind of a subtle little addition to the songs message. Amazing band! |

| Modest Mouse – Willful Suspension of Disbelief Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Everywhere, everywhere, everywhere It's all so plain, it's all a plan It's all so plain to most everyone (The information is obvious to an unbiased eye) The sky doesn't ever end The air just gets much thinner further up You could keep digging down and down A thousand graves down without turning around or finding hell You find you're digging up again Everywhere, everywhere, everywhere (We live in a physical world, theres no heavenly empire in the sky or hell in the strata) Willful suspension of disbelief (If you believe in these things, its a conscious effort to abandon that voice in your head that asks questions) |

| Modest Mouse – Birds vs. Worms Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Self pity, me so pitiful You can see that birds and worms don't get along (Im the worm, woes me for having been dealt such an awful hand) Self righteous, me so wrong You can see that we don't have to get along (Looking down on the haves, saying they don't understand what life is really about, they could never have the perspective that living in the dirt gives you. but hell, who cares? We're different animals) Self pity, me so pitiful You can see that birds and worms do not agree And we will crawl (we'll keep doing what we're doing) |
