Los Campesinos! – Heart Swells/Pacific Daylight Time Lyrics 16 years ago
at first i didn't think much of charlotte's cover of this song but it's really grown on me. the beginning isn't as sad as the original but the second part of the song was covered beautifully. it's so... perfect?

i love this song. i love the lyrics, i love the album, i love team camps.

Mount Eerie – Woolly Mammoth's Mighty Absence Lyrics 16 years ago
I love it. Incredible.

The fact that it's 26 minutes long really makes me feel like this was an important song to him.

Bright Eyes – You Will. You? Will. You? Will. You? Will. Lyrics 16 years ago
At first when I saw the title of this song I was like "wow, that's strange," but I think it's so clever. I love that it can be taken as "you will," as in telling the girl he's talking to in the song that she will return to him, but it can also be taken as a question of "will you?"

Defiance, Ohio – Grandma Song Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is about losing someone's Grandma.
"And I walk out of the hospital cursing cars because all this turnover makes me so tired"
In this line they describes when they leave the hospital after they've lost their Grandmother; they just feel so tired and like nothing is really happening, combined with the feeling of frustration at the world (the people in their cars).

"Grandma tucks you in at night; says never be afraid of anything outside. Grandma tucks you in at night, says goodnight little sweet."
These lines are just remembering the little things that his/her Grandmother used to do when they were young.

"These pictures of the past litter the floor like news print, like cities fell in stacks."
This just describes the time when you're looking at all the pictures of the person after they've gone.

"And men jumped from buildings, the dust was overwhelming, do we except anything to last?"
Here they just question whether anything great can stay.

"Goodnight little sweet, watch everything recede... La la la la"
I love these last lines so much. It seems to me like this is something their Grandmother used to say to them to help them fall asleep, and after she's gone they help themselves fall asleep by just saying that over in their head one last time.

Defiance, Ohio – Oh, Susquehanna! Lyrics 16 years ago
It seems like this is a song about growing up. The male side is talking about when he was little, he wanted nothing more than to grow up. In the line "14 seemed so exciting, but now it seems like such a blight" he's explaining that when he was young he thought that being 14-years-old would be awesome, but when he gets to that age he founds out it's not at all what he thought. He goes back there at an older age, and realizes that everything has been built up and is no longer the rural area he remembers. He explains here that he sees "too many stores and apartments and a Sunoco," and all he can wonder about is what happened to the cemetery he grew up near.

Later in the song he just talks about all the things he misses. "and i miss that place behind my house
where I hiked and climbed and played, where i ditched this noisy century or just hid out from the decade." That line talks about all those small things from his childhood that are gone now.

At the very end of the song, he talks about all the young kids that live there now and how they'll never know about what used to be there. "the kids who populate these cul de sacs will never know what stood beneath those cookie cutter houses: fields and streams and woods. They'll sit in cars and wait for mom to drive them out of this boring neighborhood." They all just want to escape this tiny hometown, and they don't care that there used to a beautiful forest or streams or anything from his childhood.

Generally just how every slowly becomes industrialized and people forget about the beauty that used to exist.

Also, I love the grammar error in the song. The plural form of "cul de sac" is "culs de sac," not "cul de sacs."

Nico – These Days Lyrics 16 years ago
It seems like this is just someone analyzing what their life has become, how they've tried to forget the past, and overall, how they've changed. It kind of has the feeling of being in a rut, and wondering if you're going to be like this forever, or if you'll change again ("seeing another highway").

1997 – water's edge Lyrics 17 years ago
wow these lyrics are really wrong. the right ones are (or so I think):

troubled boy i'll kiss you one
last time and then say goodnight forever
little girl, i'm not feeling well
these nights are long and dull
without you
who is sending letters through the mail
stop it quit calling my name
who's empty chair is at the table?
it's mine, I left it alone
who changed the locks who took the pictures of the wall?
string me along like a beautiful love song.

and for those of you who say you can't find the songs, buy the album. it's worth it.

1997 – Lovelikepoetry Lyrics 17 years ago
Doesn't the chorus go: "Don't be afraid/this ground is now holy/holy, yeah," not "don't be afraid/this crown is not holy/holy, yeah?"
But anyway, I love this song. :)

The Morning Of – Welcome Change, Goodbye Gravity Lyrics 17 years ago
That bothers me too! Sometimes it sounds like they're saying "it's at your side," but I don't know. Although I love the (piano?) part from "The Sound of Something Secure" that they added.

The Meg And Dia Band – Setting Up Sunday Lyrics 17 years ago
Now that I hear the mother meaning comments, it makes sense, but at first I thought it was about change, to be rather broad. To be more specific, a story about the way they set up a band one day, and things went so fast that it felt like they sold out the next day.

That's just what I think, lol.

Belle & Sebastian – Piazza, New York Catcher Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm not sure about this, but here's what I think:

I think this is about a girl he used to date, but things went wrong and they split up, but he still loves her. They still get together now and then, but it "will never come to love." I gather that they both might like baseball and books "tenderly you tell about the saddest book you ever read, it always makes you cry."

but he still loves her so much and just wants to run away with her because she's always on his mind.

Weatherbox – Trippin' The Life Fantastic Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song. It's amazing.

Does anyone else think he may have said "let's talk about your ill affairs?" I dunno, I guess it could be either.

I think the "judgmental pencil shavings" part may be talking about how useless everything that people think God "gives" seems to be.
