If you look at the lyrics, the entire song is a history of the early years of rock and roll, with the death of Buddy Hollie, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper being the centerpiece of it all.
But like the line "Lennon read a book on Marx"--Beatles becoming more political in their songs
"Moss grows fat on a rolling stone"--Bob Dylan losing his political edge and going electric.
"When the jester sang for the king and queen in a coat he borrowed from James Dean"--Dylan's concerts at Royal Albert Hall in England as well as a reference to the coat Dylan wore on the cover of the Bringing it all Back Home album.
Eight Miles High--the name of a very popular Byrds album, also a reference to the drug conviction of David Crosby.
"Jester on the sideline in a cast"--Dylan was forced to stop recording and touring after a motorcycle accident in Woodstock.
Satan is an obvious reference to Mick Jagger at Altamont, where Meredith Hunter was killed by members of the Hell's Angels (no angel born in hell)...also a reference to their big song of 1969, Sympathy for the Devil.
The verse that begins with "The halftime air was sweet perfume" refers to the concert the Beatles did at Shea Stadium, they all got up to dance but couldn't because the Beatles only played for like 15 minutes or something like that.
I mean I could go on because literally every line in this song has something to do with the formulative years of rock and roll but I will shut up now

The Pogues – A Pair of Brown Eyes Lyrics 17 years ago
Shane has described it as a story of a young man who sits next to "an old bastard at a bar who wants to tell you his life story".
If you want a great version of this song, check out Shane singing it with Christy Moore...awesome
