Kings of Leon – Holy Roller Novocaine Lyrics 12 years ago
This might be far-fetched, but does anyone else catch any vampire references?

"You'll be hearin' me comin', but I can't come inside."

Reminds me of one of the myths about vampires, and how they can't enter houses. This could fall in line with the idea that the song is about females being forced to submit to strong male figures.

The Delgados – Get Action! Lyrics 14 years ago
Okay well first of all, some of the lyrics are a bit off. Based on the booklet in the CD I have different lyrics. But I think the meaning of this song is pretty easy to interpret.

"No one ever said to me
That I should write a symphony
But write it, now I've wrote it and the days are growing longer
No hint of allegation, or trouble with my patience
And everyone's been mangling my name"

[Basically, he decided to do something really fantastic despite no one encouraging him to do so. "No hint of allegation", meaning, he hasn't done anything illegal or wrong, yet people are "mangling" his name because he's done something they don't think he is worthy enough for getting credit.]

"I took time to work it out
At seats of higher learning
But I never understood a single thing that they said to me
Except 'Son you know you think you've got a chance, but let me tell you
We've worked it out and you've come here to fail'"

[He tried to figure out something difficult in college, ("seats of higher learning"), but the teachers think he's an idiot so they don't really try to teach him, is what I'm getting. So they tell him, "Well, we know you think you can do it, but you're really an idiot, so don't try."]

"Friend, don't you know
I've got thoughts that I'm scared of
Guidance from me
Is a thing to beware of
Get it on
Bang a gong"

[The chorus is the one thing that confuses me a little about this song. "Friend, don't you know / I've got thoughts that I'm scared of," kind of makes me think that he has new ideas he's not really sure what to do with. "Guidance from me / is a thing to beware of." Perhaps these lines mean that he considers himself an unpredictable person who may actually have no idea what he's doing. In the end, I have no idea why the allusion to a T.Rex song was included.]

"Every single person who has told you that you couldn't
Lives in fear that you'll achieve the things in life they think you shouldn't
Unparalleled aggression, unswerving in direction
And that was why they set my hair on fire."

["Every single person who has told you that you couldn't / Lives in fear that you'll achieve the things in life they think you shouldn't." I think this is simply saying that there are people in this world who believe they are on a "higher level" than others. Thus, they feel justified to tell people that they consider stupid what they can or cannot do. And then the singer goes to say that despite these people, you should tackle your goals with "unparalleled (unmatched) aggression", and go after it "unswerving in direction", or, without letting yourself be distracted/drawn away from your goals. And the singer goes on to tell that because he had these qualities, people did something terrible to him to try and scare him away from his accomplishment.]

"You worked out the best of it and I worked out the rest of it
And finally solutions fell around us like an autumn
We were wrong and we were right a bit
We laughed and then we cried a bit
I'll tell you now I'm not been born to fail."

[This verse tells how the singer had help from another, and together they worked out their query. Sometimes they were wrong, sometimes they were right, but ultimately, they solved the problem and achieved their goal, leading them to tears of happiness. The singer declares he's not been born to fail like his teachers/superiors/peers said he would.]

"Friend, don't you know
I got these eyes from crying
You are depraved
I salute you for trying
When I'm gone
Take my song"

["Friend, don't you know / I got these eyes from crying" — I believe he's trying to say that his eyes, or he himself, is more "wise", perhaps, because of the struggles he went through. "You are depraved / I salute you for trying." — Possibly referring to his adversaries, who are depraved (corrupt) for telling someone they would fail at life, but he salutes them for putting in such an effort. "When I'm gone / Take my song." This is another lyric I'm not sure what to make of.]

"No one ever said to me
That I should write a symphony
But write it now I've wrote it and the days are growing longer
No hint of allegation, or trouble with my patience
And everyone's been laying off my mane"

[Most of these lyrics would have the same meaning as the first verse, since they are the same lyrics. However, the last line adds more of a finality to the tale. "And everyone's been laying off my mane" — meaning, he's had such a huge accomplishment that anything anyone can do is get off his back and pout about being wrong. Also, "laying off my mane", — no one "sets (his) hair on fire" anymore.]

"Friend, don't you know
I've got thoughts that I'm scared of
Guidance from me
Is a thing to beware of
Friend don't you know
I got these eyes from crying
You are depraved
And I love you for trying
When I'm wrong
Bring it on."

[This final chorus has much the same meaning as the previous two choruses, except the last two lines: "When I'm wrong / Bring it on," which would mean that when someone claims that he is wrong, he welcomes the challenge of proving himself right.]

Overall, I think this song is about facing your goals in life with determination, and not letting others bring you down, despite whatever awful things they may say or do to you.

The Delgados – American Trilogy Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is definitely about a person going through a deep depression, but I also think it is optimistic in that it hints that he is climbing out of his depression.

"All the fever in my brain, I'm alright now, I can even take the pain."

Meaning that despite everything, he isn't going to give up because he's learning to take the pain. Even though life is hard and at times dreary it's not worth giving up.

Arctic Monkeys – Fluorescent Adolescent Lyrics 14 years ago
I think you're pretty much spot on with everything. Although with the "Remember when the boys were all electric?", I wonder if he's alluding to how as men get older they start losing their sex drive. "Electric" kind of being "electrified" by wanting sex, but as her guy gets older he's not as enthusiastic about it, while she still is. Because I have to agree with strokez; I don't really think that referring to a vibrator really fits...

Lupe Fiasco – Baba Says Cool for Thought Lyrics 15 years ago
It's referring to Hurricane Katrina.
"Leave you thirsty and strand, Katrina"

The government failed in bringing fresh water and other supplies to the victims of Katrina in New Orleans until days after the disaster.
