Hmmm . . . Demri died of a complication associated with heroin use referred to as "cotton fever"? That's not what I've read in many bios on her. Most of the ones I've come across do say she died of complications of IV drug use, but they list bacterial endocarditis as the complication, not "cotton fever." In any case, the song, IMO, seems to be about a friend who "got born again" and is now "lost" because the newly found "religion" has made him unrecognizable as the initial friend he used to be. This religion has turned him into an unthinking drone that merely repeats the programmed ideas the religion has brainwashed him to believe. The song feels like a lamentation of the loss of the friend that used to be and an indictment of a simple-minded religion that professes to "cleanse" people of their sins with the mere repetition of a few words. |

This song is surely about abortion, and Weiland has said as much. "somebody told me, I know where to go" He gets advice from a friend on where to go to have an abortion. "unfriendly feelings, down on wounded knee, Unfriendly reasons, some blind mother's need" When you get to an abortion clinic, some of those places are "pro-life" counseling clinics designed to lure in women who want an abortion and then pressure them to keep the baby they don't really want. These places ignore what the mother needs in favor of the baby's "right to be born." These places have all kinds of pamphlets and literature designed to "sell you life," meaning "pro-life" and they push their agenda so hard that they resort to all kinds of manipulation. Hence, they lie. |
