I haven't sen the correct meaning yet...it is about religion, but it's actually the other way around. This song mirrors a bible verse (I forget which one)... Sheep are the righteous people that follow, however, they are not following each other as I have seen in other posts, they are following god. Goats go against god and live only for themselves. In the bible verse, at the final judgment god takes the sheep and sorts them on his right side. He also takes the goats and sorts them on his left. He then casts the goats down to hell and the sheep go to heaven for leading good and righteous lives dedicated to him. The verse even mentions various things such as stonemasons (or other professions) putting their nose to the grindstone and doing their job (doing your job in society and doing well to others is what you're supposed to do) The wine drinkers and panpipe players are doing nothing of importance with their lives. They are simply trying to have a good time.( As soon as you're born you start dying so / ya might as well have a good time is the rationale of all the goats). THis song is contradicting and rationalizing both sides. This is a good point because the verse says that regardless of your rationale god is right and you need to do what he says is right. Cake is also a band that has a message and expresses some of these messages at concerts (war, hunger, etc...) There is not debating this song meaning, this is almost literally the exact way the verse flows. Even referring to people as sheep and goats. |
