The music sets up a back-and-forth with the lyrics on a couple levels. The lyrical emphasis on blessing and the final line "let your crooked hands be holy" (when juxtaposed with the childhood imagery) seem to describe the purity of innocence. And the tinkling sounds throughout would seem to agree with this.
Ultimately this song is about loving and remembering the beauty that our innocence gave us. Who is to say it is something we've lost? |

This song encapsulates a lot of the meaning behind many of Sam's songs. Though dust may rise and fall like the sun and man and child, the rhythm will always linger on. |

It seems to me, and this is only my opinion, but Sam has a strong love of life which echoes through each of his songs as they explore the interconnectivity and depth of every facet which we too often take for granted. Each of his songs could contain devices pointing toward death and life and birth and change, because every song is a celebration of living. It's not that each song is necessarily a puzzle so much as a picture. |
