Lots of info on the real meaning of this song here, as well as some history: "Before recording Full Moon Fever, an arsonist burned down Petty's house while he was in it. He escaped and spent much of the next few months driving between hotel rooms and a rented house. It was on these drives that he came up with many of the songs for the album, and the fire was a huge influence. Petty felt grateful to be alive, and the whole incident had a calming effect on him." also "George W. Bush used this in his 2000 Presidential campaign. When Petty found out, he threatened to sue, as he did not support Bush. Bush stopped using the song but won the election anyway. This is one of my favourite love songs ever and to me it means exactly what it says - he fell in love with someone who once was just a face in a crowd, perhaps someone who came to watch them play. 'A Face in the crowd' was released in 1989, Full Moon Fever... And it makes me wonder if he had already fallen in love with Dana by then or whether he accidentally predicted his future. | I've always thought this song was about addiction (to heroin). Was quite surprised to hear some people think it was about a car crash. Interesting how people interpret things differently! But, yes, it's definetely about addiction! | |

This is in the Powder Blue CD1, this cd has 3 songs: Powder Blue Suffer About Time Powder Blue CD2 has 3 songs too: Shorley Wall (which is Powder Blue, but with a different name) Golden Fall, which is an acustic version of Powder Blue Tears from a Willow I went to buy the Asleep on the back cd in Camden town in 2001, and the guy in the record shop gave me the two cds for free!!!! :) |
