Thanks for the correction (I try my best hearing the lyrics but I;m hearing impaired so i miss hear them at times) =] Yeah I agree it's a breakup song. Belly Up I believe is a symbolism (when you drown you are 'belly up'). So it's as if they drowning in their own relationship, the death is obviously the end of it. Yes her love for him lyrics speak for herself - I can relate to it. I guess when a relationship gets bitter we all assume all feelings are dead but not always. Even though the bitterness is painful to her, the love will go on. |

Ok. after reading through all the comments I have found no one has seemed to have said anything about the song title and it's possible significant meaning. here i go. As the listeners already know, Relient K is a Christian rock band(very light rock, so it's pleasant to listen to). The song title and what is in the chorus "Who I Am Hates Who I've Been." In the bible, Moses asked God's name, and he said "I am Who I Am".Note the capitals, so perhaps "Who I Am" is Jesus, and he at the least wasn't happy with who he had been(implying the song writer) and now he has changed to realize what he was doing in the past was not good. So thats how I see this song. It;s defiantly about relationships. Whether inter-person, inter-god or even a relationship with a drug addiction, that's your choice to make. Overall Relient K may be a Christian band but they are easily capable of making songs that all can enjoy, understand and learn from. God Bless. xo |

It's nice to see so many people love this song, it's pretty much my all time favorite song. Every time I hear it, tears come to my eyes as the imagery comes to my mind. I ended up drawing my favorite imagery of the song, well it was the strongest in my mind "He grabs my wrist....". It hangs on my wall as a reminder of the past in a way.... Abusive relationship is an interesting perspective of the song. It is possible, I've always viewed it as just he was incapable for loving her, she feels worthless about it so keeps going back and giving her all till shes.... empty.... |
