| The Velvet Underground – Heroin Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
"I'm gonna try to nullify my life 'cause when the blood begins to flow When it shoots up the dropper's neck When I'm closing in on death" "Then thank God that I'm as good as dead Then thank your God that I'm not aware And thank God that I just don't care And you can't help me now, you guys" Seems a bit of a negative slant to me, even if he does say he feels like Jesus' son. |

| Bob Dylan – Quinn the Eskimo (Mighty Quinn) Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I always thought this was about heroin, thus the reference "everybody's gonna doze" | |
| Aerosmith – Dream On Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| I disagree, in spirit anyhow. I think it's about not giving up on your dreams: "Dream until your dreams come true" | |
| Neil Young – The Needle And The Damage Done Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| I think this song is about George Bush getting us into war w/ Iraq. The first verse is about getting secret bogus information, the second verse is about getting found out and losing support, the third verse is about him lying to try to recover from being found out, milk blood is a reference to sending American to their death in an attempt to keep up the fictitious front, the last verse is about it all blowing over. I know this song was written in a different millenia, it's a testiment to Neil Young's prophetic insight. | |
| Dirty Pretty Things – Bang Bang You're Dead Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| I thought this song was at least in part about pete, and the babyshamble song lost art of murder was an answer song, or vice versa. Wish artists were a bit more forthcoming about such things, there was no mistaking that the John Lennon song "How do you sleep?" was about paul mccartney, so many blatant refrences it does not try to pretend it's about anything else. I'm probably wrong about the bang bang / lost art of murder ties though, I usually am. | |
| The Dresden Dolls – Boston Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
Wow, dikee, I think you might be right, I would never have caught that! Karma policeman, I don't thinks she suspects he cheats, it sounds like they both sleep around in an open relationship and throw their conquest in each other's face. |

| Regina Spektor – Man of a Thousand Faces Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Me thinks regina had a pinch too much vellocet. | |
| Traffic – Freedom Rider Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| I believe the lyrics should be "he leads you" not "he leaves you" and it is "siren" not "silent". As for the meaning, I think ColourReporter is right. | |
| The Velvet Underground – Heroin Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| This song is about a boy, and his love for his pet iguana, who wanders off one day. Though the boy serches relentlessly for his iguana, he nevers finds him, because the iguana was eaten by a giant squirrel named peanuthead. The boy grows up to be a cereal killer. It's a profoundly sad song. | |
| The Velvet Underground – Sweet Jane Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| This song is not about heroin, the song "heroin" is about heroin. I don't think Lou Reed would ever write about heroin in the same smooth slickness this song conveys, his approach to songs about drugs was more journalistic, I can't imagine him glamourizing smack. Think about the songs heroin and waiting for my man, there is no subtlety, those songs are obvious and blatant, and in no way make drug use look attractive. | |
| Dirty Pretty Things – You Fucking Love It Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Woman turning tricks? | |
| Babyshambles – Lost Art of Murder Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| 4 & 9 are hard points to make in craps. I think this song, at least in part, is an answer to the dirty pretty things "bang, bang, you're dead", which I think is about pete, even though I think carl denied it was about pete. | |
| Amanda Palmer – The Point of It All Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I thought it was about someone who became withdrawn after their friends made a comment that hit too close to home and the person withdraws from life permanently. I took needle as a verb, the needling caused her to withdraw. Here are the lyrics from the WKAP pdf lyric file: oh, what a noble, distinguished collection of fine little friends you have made hitting the tables without you again: no we’ll wait, no we promise, we’ll wait june makes these excellent sewing machines out of common industrial waste she spends a few days at a time on the couch but she’s fine she wears shades, she wears shades but no one can stare at the wall as good as you, my babydoll and you’re aces for coming along you’re almost human, after all and you’re learning that just ‘cause they call themselves friends doesn’t mean they’ll call... they made the comment in jest but you’ve got the needle i guess that’s the point of it all maybe a week in the tropics would help to remind you how nice life can be we propped you right up in a chair on a deck with a beautiful view of the sea but a couple weeks later we came back and you and the chair were nowhere to be seen you had magically moved to the closet eyes fixed to the place where the dryer had been oh, but no one can stare at the wall as good as you, my babydoll and you’re aces for coming along you’re almost human, after all why on earth would i keep you propped up in here when you so love the fall...? the pattern’s laid out on the bed with dozens of colors of thread but you’ve got the needle i guess that’s the point in the end but it’s better to waste your day watching the scenery change at a comatose rate than to put yourself in it and turn into one of those cigarette ads that you hate but while you were sleeping some men came around said they had some dimensions to take i’m not sure what they were talking about but they sure made a mess of your face but still, no one can stare at the wall as good as you, my babydoll and you’re aces for playing along you’re almost human, even now and just ‘cause they call themselves experts it doesn’t mean sweet fuck all... they’ve got the permanent press homes with a stable address and they’ve got excitement and life by the fistful but you’ve got the needle i guess that’s the point of it all |

| Amanda Palmer – Oasis Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Love that the title refers to a band but the songs not really about them. I know oasis is supposed to be the current beatles, but I always found their music pompous & boring. This song is much more interesting than an oasis song, which I guess is like saying that it's more interesting than watching paint dry. | |
| The Dresden Dolls – Have To Drive Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Here's the lyrics from the pdf that comes w/ WKAP: i have to drive i have my reasons, deer it’s cold outside i hate the seasons here i suffer mornings most of all i feel so powerless and small by 10 o’clock i’m back in bed fighting the jury in my head we learn to drive it’s only natural, deer we drive all night we haven’t slept in years we suffer mornings most of all we saw you lying in the road we tried to dig a decent grave but it’s still no way to behave it is a delicate position spin the bottle pick the victim catch a tiger switch directions if he hollers break his ankles to protect him we’ll have to drive they’re getting closer just get inside it’s almost over we will save your brothers we will save your cousins we will drive them far away from streets and signs from all signs of mad mankind we suffer mornings most of all wake up all bleary-eyed and sore forgetting everything we saw i’ll meet you in an hour at the car. |

| "Get 5 Free Song Downloads with Rhapsody" WTF is that? That's definitely NOT in the lyrics, who the fuck posted that shit? | |
| The Dresden Dolls – Me and the Minibar Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Wow, you guys really know how to take a sad song & drag it into a dark place! I don't think nearly as many people die in her songs as I read in people's interpretations. Maybe if you guys weren't always killing off her lovers she wouldn't be so lonely( just kidding, in case you can't tell). I think it's about being lonely after being let down/left by your lover. The circumstance of her being alone on her birthday in a hotel room getting drunk is a metaphor for depression & loneliness. I have gotten drunk while I was depressed & alone & can say that you don't have to do anything else self destructive, you've already put yourself in a sick pathetic state. |
|
| The Dresden Dolls – Dirty Business Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I think it's probably about the people she knew before she made it. The reference to "who was mine in 99" sounds like she's talking about the people/lovers she had before the dolls formed( I think that was 2000 or 2001). | |
| The Dresden Dolls – Shores of California Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Did anyone notie that the video on youtube says that it is a video response to david lee roth's cover of "California Girls"? I don't know if the song was written as a response, but I think it's just Amanda having a little fun & everyone should lighten up. | |
| The Dresden Dolls – First Orgasm Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Burning w/ brilliance! How can you not feel the loneliness in the piano? |
|
| The Dresden Dolls – Sing Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I think Amanda has amazing vocals, even when her voice cracks like when she sings "Hollywood" in night reconnaissance, which I'm sure is as intentional as the skipping in "coin operated boy" & "Good Day". Her vocals are extremely powerful, as are her words. I agree w/ the metaphor idea & what so*not*femo said, except I think it's meant to encourage other people to "gonna do/sing/be what" they want to be. Get over your fear of rejection & step outside your comfort zone. |
|
| The Dresden Dolls – Mrs. O. Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
This song says to me: Believe in the dream, not the reality. The original reply to Virginia's letter states the same thing. This is quite upbeat & powerful if you think about it, like standing for what you believe in when you feel out numbered & the facts contradict you. Of course that's my take on it, I'm pretty fucked up in the head, which is part of the attraction to the dolls' music. |
|
| The Dresden Dolls – Modern Moonlight Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
"wire cutters of the world you know what to use it for" - surely she's not encouraging anarchy. I love this song, especially since it's critical of the technology that enabled me to discover the dolls in the first place( the internet), since the radio stations here in Detroit have been taken over by the corporate giant festering puss oozing anal warts that force us to listen to shit like paramore's "crush crush crush" & coldplay's whiny diarrhea every ten minutes to the point where it's hard to keep down the acid reflux. Guess I went on a bit of a rant there. Do the dolls get airplay anywhere in the US besides Boston? |
|
| The Dresden Dolls – 672 Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| It's about the ritualistic sacrifices they've made every time they play a city. When they arrive in a new city on tour, they offer up one of their fans to the pagan god of rock-n-roll for the sake of creativity. They drain the victim of blood which they use to splash around in, paint each other & drink. This song is about the 672nd victim, the line "someday they'll find out about you too" is a warning that you could be next. | |
| The Dresden Dolls – Gravity Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
What piano songbook is Freyja talking about & where can I get it? BTW, I've read most of these posts & they all make good arguments for their interpretations, but I notice there are a lot of eating disorder links on this page. |
|
| The Dresden Dolls – Bad Habit Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Thanks ultimatesparanza , I like most people thought this song was about self mutilation. BTW, I had the pleasure of meeting Amanda @ Rothbury( which I learned about from the Dolls website after I discoverd their music a few months ago) & she is the most charming, charismatic woman I've ever met. We had just finished yoga which Brian was calling out, and even though I had a hard time talking since I had lost half my voice by this point, I told her how much I loved her music & her & she gave me a hug & I whispered "I was a little dirty"( from doing yoga w/o a mat in the dirt) & she whispered back "We're all a little dirty". It was unbelievable! |
|
| The Dresden Dolls – Sorry Bunch Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
This song is so obvious: It's a song about someone Brian & Amanda killed and their regret "We're a sorry bunch", probably vehicular manslaughter "You should look where you are going" "The odds of it are such a drag my darling" they dragged the body after hitting it "I could've lost her hand" the hand was severed in the accident "They could've dropped us off" they were stoned & no one would give them a ride home "God I could have lost my life" prison. Everyone knows Amanda's a socialist cokehead who worships the devil, the real meaning of this song should not come as a shock. |
|
| The Dresden Dolls – Half Jack Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I think Rhibecka nailed it pretty well, except the part about the pills, birth control pills were around long before Amanda was born. I'd say the pills are reference to either psychotropic meds like zoloft or some drug that puts you so out of it you don't remember who you are. This song is NOT ABOUT HERMAPHRODITES. |
|
| The Dresden Dolls – Girl Anachronism Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| The word anachronism refers to being out of sync w/ the times, not to be confused w/ anarchist & anarchy. My guess is that the character in the song feels out of place & doesn't fit in, so she must be ahead or behind the times( most likely the latter, considering the many of the costumes she wears are from the past). | |
| The Dresden Dolls – Backstabber Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
"Down w/ the Japanese" is a reference to musicians who can't make it in the US & Europe go to Japan, who, from the impression I get, embrace just about any western musician. Tom Waits wrote a song about this called "Big In Japan". This song does sound like it's targeted at a specific person, but since they didn't achieve success, it's doubtful anyone not close to the band will be able to figure it out. I doubt that it's about Panic at the Disco, since they are probably more successful & known than the dolls. They probably dedicated this song to them at a show because of the video they did w/ them using this music. I will say that I definitely don't think this is about Brian. |
