Kids in Glass Houses – The Morning Afterlife Lyrics 15 years ago
This is without doubt my favourite song on the new album, and oh so good to listen to in an emotional breakdown aha. I agree almost entirely with the comment above, it describes how life is, when things start going good you have it alright for a couple of weeks and then you fall back down to square one again. I've had this exact feeling lately and I honestly couldn't put it better than these guys have.

The Veils – Killed By The Boom Lyrics 16 years ago
I thought that this was a really 'new' sound for The Veils. Obviously they pulled it off incredibly, as per usual. I'm not sure, but I got the impression that this song was about a working class man, who died? If a world leader dies then people make a fuss, writing 'sonnets' and the like. That's the way I took it anyway.

Elbow – The Bones Of You Lyrics 17 years ago
This is another one of those songs that sums up life in such a precise and perfect manner, Garvey is nothing short of phenomenal. He manages to take the feelings which you can't desrcibe in a thousand words, and put them into four minutes and forty nine seconds of music.
It's obviously about love nowadays. A businessman who is pushed for time all of the time, rushing around, almost on 'autopilot'. Then Garvey makes him human again when the 'tentacles' of a song bring him back to a former lover. I'm sure everyone has a song that reminds them of one particular moment with someone, whenever they hear it. Garvey sums it up so perfectly with the lines 'and the world moves in slow-mo, straight to my head, like the first cigarrette of the day'.
He's tried all he can to remove her from his mind, as is said in the fourth verse. It's like he's kidding himself, but he want's her and all of those times back. The last verse 'and i can't move my arm through the fear that you will wake' is so true. When you're daydreaming of that person who is so precious to you, that you just cant blink or it will stop. At which point it's gone hence the three thousand miles away.
Tragic and beautiful and one of the highlights of this album.

Elbow – Starlings Lyrics 17 years ago
I just love this song. It is certainly in my top 3 love songs of all time, it is so beautifully written and the feeling he sings it with just makes it so much more powerful, to bring a tear to my eye is something not a lot of songs do.
'You are the only thing in any room you're ever in' so poetic and a brilliant description, I think this line just about sums up everything he intends to say in this song. How to him she's the only thing that matters - to the extent that sometimes she is the only thing that is there.
Also on a more bittersweet note, this love for her is so true, that he accepts that she is too good for him, like he wants nothing more than for her to be happy. As in the line 'I sat you down and told you how the truest love that's ever found is for oneself' you can see he is trying not to push her away but to let her know that she is special. More special than himself.
I could go on for hours about Elbow's lyrics, but I'll leave it be. Again one of the most powerful love songs of all time.

Placebo – My Sweet Prince Lyrics 17 years ago
From what I gathered it was written from the point of view of one of Brian's lovers who happened to use heroin. She wrote something like 'my gentle prince you are the one' to him on the wall when she left, I dont know the facts.

What I interpreted it as, before I stumbled upon that gem. Was Brian loving another man. What with the confusion at the beginning 'Never thought...never thought'.

'The dragon' has connotations to opium, which i believe has a big part in making heroin, well i know it does. So the dragon chasing the pain away is all about forgetting everything, ending the day with heroine. My Sweet Prince (when I first heard the song) I thought had a double meaning, as in heroine and Brian's partner, Showing that he was addicted.

All of the second verse is imo about Brian telling himself he has to give up on the relationship 'reitre'. But he really doesnt want to, abstain meaning giving up, against your will. 'Close up the hole in my vein' could be giving up heroin? I wasn't sure, as it would kind of suggest that he wasn't trying to give up heroin as well...

The third verse I thought was now about heroin, where the previous 2 were about his partner. Now he has lost them and heroin is what he has left. He seems angry 'Never thought you'd fuck with my brain' almost like he's mad at himself for thinking it wouldnt happen. Breaking the chain is ending the relationship - he never dreamed that addiction would ruin it.
'still flush all the pain away' he's never going to give up, now that its over heroine's what he has left.

This song, whether I interpreted it wrong or not, is my favourite Placebo song hands down. It makes me cry every single time I hear it. Another genius creation.

InMe – Thanks For Leaving Me Lyrics 17 years ago
I think you can pretty much take this song as it first appears, however what would be the fun in that!?
In my opinion its an attempt at getting over someone he really loved, and I'm not sure, I've devised one of two meanings.
He is still desperately in love with this girl 'I look out the window for a cloud, That you might be under', showing how even every day things revolve around her, and how he's struggling to accept that she can go on without him. Then it gets confusing for him 'the sun is going down too early' he nearly had her and then lost her, cause of the light, but essentially because of the argument or whatever ended the relationship. Next 'embers' shower his eyes, it gets painful for him thinking of her.
So now is where I get confused 'Would I be lying here with you' could either literally mean that he has moved on and found someone else, or he is still lying with the person who has left him, but just his memory of her. Because then it goes on to say 'in an empty bed' which suggests its just him imagining her there, and being selective about the bits he loved about her, which is why he is almost convincing himself he's glad she's gone.
'So far away it almost hurts' was at the start of the relationship the feeling is remember 'common ground' the things that they had in common with each other and what started their love in the first place. This was 'square one'. Then it snowballed and they became totally infatuated 'baby steps get bigger'.
Again I get confused at this bit too, it could mean he was actually holding her close, and now she has left its 'an empty bed'. Or it could mean he dreamt of holding her close, the bed remaining empty. Choose whichever.
Next he's begging this girl to either get back with him, get with him in the first place or yeah, whichever, 'promise me forever','ill wash it away for you/give it all up for you' its all these things he'd be willing to do for her. I think his shadow is symbolic of what he has become after all this thinking he's done about her, its turned him into quite an introverted and confused person.
'no more pain', would suggest that the song means he had the girl and he has now lost herand moved on. 'no more shame' suggests that he either never had the girl (tht he used to imagine he was with) and he no longer imagines it, or he had the girl and now no longer imagines her, so im not sure on that one either.
So thats my take on it, quite possibly utterly wrong.

Elbow – Grounds for Divorce Lyrics 17 years ago
A cracking single, I must admit to taking onboard the other comments while reading this!!

I saw it as a song about alcoholism and the fear of losing his love, but also the good it may do to them both.

'The seldom seen kid' is indeed Brian Glancy, who they drink to in the first line, how you do to celebrate someones life. However this is also quite sad in itself, as alcohol has now become his escape. Possibly he is seeing Brian Glancy's escape (death) as a more permanent one?

Of course the chorus is about Glancy's grave, and how it tears him apart everytime he sees it and he 'falls' down to square one again. As after every chorus they return to 'drinking to the seldom seen kid' so in the pub (his square one).

Right, in my opinion verse one is all about the things he and his wife have done together. She bought him a compass/watch type thing, he knows he should go home (maybe even a hint from her before his drinking got so bad) but he just keeps rubbing it. Like if something itches, or is marked on like pen, you rub it to make it go away. Then the chinese cigarrete case (not tiny ciggarette case) is a present she gave him before everything started going downhill, or possibly a present from Glancy, either way it reminds him of good times or has some sentimental meaning and although he is willing to lose everything else (and admits he will) he holds this dear.

The second verse in my opinion is about his interest in other women, he talks about whorese and 'flesh by the pound' which is paying for a body to use. And then goes on to how he buys his wife roses, but she knows why he does it, and because she does it doesn't make up for it. So in a way its stabbing himself in the foot because the only time he buys her roses is when he has hired a whore, she knows this and his guilt isnt at all consoled. Pretty sure someones already mentioned this (but just in case!) aniseed is a reference to absynthe, showing his further dependence on alcohol.

Finally he says 'we'll be drinking with the seldom seen kid' this i think has a double meaning, how his wife's and his own relationship will die, like the seldom seen kid, and also how everyone else will also die. Giving it a more universal significance. Essay over.

The Veils – The Nowhere Man Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song and was fortunate enough to hear it live (twice!) It is awesome and Finn sings it so beautifully. I think its about a drug habit, possibly, or just a guy who needs a bit of time to reflect. No hidden meaning imo just a good bit of raw emotion.

KoЯn – Creep (Radiohead cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this cover, when I saw it on the Unplugged album I had to double check (ok triple check) I was so excited to hear it! I think his voice is incredibly similar to Thom's compared to how it is normally and you can tell that the lyrics really mean something to him. I think anyone who says he shouldn't have covered a Radiohead song obviously aren't all too keen on KoRn. To be perfectly honest it beats Mark Ronson's version to a bloody and mangled pulp. Lets face Mark your version was utter crap.

Puressence – Casting Lazy Shadows Lyrics 17 years ago
This one is about drug abuse leading to a relationship failing. I think...
The casting lazy shadows bit is probably related to weed, being chilled out and relaxed, especially to stop him thinking. Just to take everything off his mind and let him relax for a minute. However I think the shadows bit, is to represent something that passed a long time ago, both his drug habit and the relationship?
The thinking behind the relationship theory is all the use of 'take your money back' 'take it all back', this is the violent part of him. I think possibly on some trips he maybe got quite violent 'you've got your head gear on' could be a reference to her having to defend herself. Very crude I know. But thats my interpretation. I also think 'looking through last year though, but all I saw was you' suggests he's totally not over her and that's probably the reason his drug addiction is now 'shadows' as he's left it behind because he realises all the harm it can do? 'You're all I need to stop me thinking' seems to show how she could so easily replace the part missing from his life, that was drugs and he feels ought to be love.
Overall, I think he desperately wants someone to fill the gap that drugs no longer can, that might just be me though.

Puressence – Mr. Brown Lyrics 17 years ago
Easily my favourite song from the 1996 album. I blame my parents for indoctrinating me at 4 years old!!
Obviously its about living on the rougher part of town. I think the 'rubies in the glass' are meant to represent blood of Mr Brown himself, and his other victims. In that Mr Brown has seen the 'rubies in the grass' of other people who he has stabbed and robbed he's bound to say something 'you talk about it' so he has to stab him as well.
Also the rubies are what the mugger (James) lives off, in that in order to take the money or whatever off his victims he has to kill them or else they would talk about what happened. So the blood of the person is like the money he takes off them? Am I making sense?
'The sun don't shine' in my opinion is a reference to wishing he could live life differently, as he knows this isnt the way forawrd but is kind of stuck in a rut. 'Why do you always lie?' suggests he's ignoring his conscience telling him he could live a more honest and easy life and sticking to his guns and stealing. Backing up his argument with his conscience he asks 'How would you know?' 'Can you feel?' both rhetorical questions, suggesting he's the one who has to live the life, his conscience couldn't undrestand.
Altogether sounding like a really troubling mental thing, arguing with himself, not knowing how to break the habit and get out alive and OK.
Thats the essay over, for such an awesome song I hope my interpretation is near enough and I haven't pulled it apart too much.
