A Perfect Circle – The Noose Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think the speaker of this song is being quite as nice as you think, Victoria. The tone and diction of the speaker makes it seem like he's looking for revenge more than reminding him of his past. There's a reason the song is called "The Noose".

It's probably about a guy who did some (unmentioned) thing in the past, that ended up with someone dead. The speaker of this song isn't satisfied with whatever that person did or didn't do to compensate for his act, and he's looking for revenge.

Opeth – Windowpane Lyrics 17 years ago
"Inside plays a lullaby/ Slurred voice over children cries" is helpful to the interpretation of child abuse. But this next quote really drives it home: "Skin covering a secret scar." The explicit mention of skin seems important. Obviously, a ghost wouldn't have skin. That quote suggests a mental or sexual abuse, rather than a physical beating. The speaker is probably a neighbor.

Combined with the lullaby quote, that really supports the idea that it is about an abused child, who may pace and look out the window. The speaker has an idea of what goes on, but he passes the child up; in the first two verses, he may see the child looking at the window, briefly illuminated (probably by a passing car light). He makes excuses, but eventually thinks he needs help. The first two lines of the second verse make excuses, but the last two realize that he might need his help.

The speaker can hear the crying and the futile attempts to calm him, based on the third verse.

The fourth verse highlights the child's agony. The loneliness of the child is so strong that it can be seen in his eyes. He can't tell anyone, so he is hiding a secret scar. He waves goodbye to his parents, but they ignore him.

The fifth verse is talking about the speaker. He is deeply angered by this child's treatment. He goes so far as to say that it outshines all reason inside; his anger can never be calmed by anything one says in defense of such parents. His dreams have been haunted by the mistreatment of this child.

I personally think that it may not be verbal abuse per se, but a kind of negligence.

Porcupine Tree – A Smart Kid Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the depression thing fits in nicely with this song. I'd like to add a comment on the title "A Smart Kid". The title seems like it would be said in the third person about the narrator, as in "Yeah, he's a smart kid." Perhaps the narrator was lonely, but the people around him thought of him as A Smart Kid and nothing more. They couldn't see his struggle. Because of this, he feels stranded, and that there must be something that can save him, even if it does seem far-fetched.

Porcupine Tree – Stranger By The Minute Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this is about paranoia, or schizophrenia.
"Killers, children...

They look like tourists, it makes me want to laugh."

He's paranoid, thinks everyone's out to get him. He can find something incriminating about every situation (under floorboards, underwater, in the shade). He's only getting Stranger by the Minute. My 2 cents, anyway.

Audioslave – The Last Remaining Light Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm pretty sure the lyrics are wrong.

"And if you don't believe the sun will rise,
Stand alone and greet the coming night
In the last remaining light"
That should be the chorus.

The last remaining light is the light of the day that is left, before the coming night. In the last remaining light, give up hope and greet the coming night. It's a very melancholic song, but very beautiful.

Bad Religion – Atheist Peace Lyrics 17 years ago
For the people who are describing themselves as agnostic, agnosticism is completely different from theism and atheism. Agnosticism deals with what you know, while theism and atheism deals in what you believe. Theism describes belief in a god, and atheism decscribed no belief in a god, not belief in no god. What is described as 'strong atheism' should really be call non-theism.

People who say that the threat of hell and promise of heaven keep people in line need to review the christian religion. The christian bible says that faith gets you into heaven, not deeds. The oldest argument illustrating this is asserting that Hitler, a catholic, could get into heaven, as long as he believes in Jesus, while Gandhi would go to hell for his lack of that belief. There is no justice in this kind of judgement, and there's nothing to stop any christian from going genocidal.

And for those who say that religion is the only reason for war, you are right. It is merely a tool that drives differing opinions against each other. But, would you let 3rd graders take guns to school?

Anyway, the song is awesome. I just heard it 2 hours ago, and now I love it.
