Sounds to me like their relationship was torn apart because the boy always expected things to happen for him, or someone else to make things happen for him... he never tried to make things work for himself. She says "tighten your tie boy" I think because she wants him to actually dress up and try to go out into the world and make something of himself. But he doesn't, and despite how much she loves him, she has to let him go. And now he's alone, still waiting for good things to happen to him without doing anything to achieve success in life. And as time goes by her memory of their love fades, but she tries to remember and hold on to the good parts. |

Sounds to me like the guy in the story got this girl intoxicated, enough to have sex with him even though she didn't want to before. Almost rape-ish. I get that from "five glasses changed my mind" and "My invitation was involuntary dilation and now I cant recall your name." Time passes and she sees him again, and to me it seems like as she greets him she remembers what happened before and now he has risen to a higher station in life, with conversations of "scholarships and occupations"- and how her reputation was soiled from what happened between them even though she was practically raped. Maybe she's in a relationship, but she starts to hear rumors about the guy, or starts seeing things in him she doesn't want to be with- and now its like the relationship is being forced on her. "I had a moment Of doubtful suspension But it's almost forgotten It's been pulled away" --she starts to get suspicious of him, but someone is controlling her, telling her to stop being "paranoid" and enjoy what she's got. The guy she's with, or someone else? Maybe both, which would explain "too many hands". The chorus basically says she can't fall, she can't get away to make her own mistakes because there's always someone controlling her 'for her own good'... forcing her to stay in the relationship. |

Sounds good... basically, they were together, they had problems- possibly in the idea of the line "I don't know what you really want from me But I don't fit in your reality" -she broke it off, with 'no good reason' in his eyes, so he considers her to be cruel and heartless... when she is simply getting away from a relationship she doesn't feel comfortable in. |

I have to agree that it is basically about a woman seeing another man behind her boyfriend/husband's back. "Digging up rumours of the kids in the park What awful things happened in the dark?" I would assume that phrase was of the husband finding out about his wife's secret rendevous with her lover. "Take, just one last dare Pretend you don't care Till twilight falls Wait, is someone else here? And I can't stop my tears I've never been so scared" The lovers basically act as though they care nothing for each other during the day, but once twilight falls they can be together secretly. But now the husband has shown up in the dark and the wife is frightened because he has found them out. And of course, the husband buries his wife's lover alive in the cellar... and she finds out: "Secrets she discovers drain her face of color" |

My opinion... which could be extremely off, but it's here nonetheless. I couldn't say what each phrase means individually, but to me it sounds as though it's generally about someone who has a shitty family life and desires attention from her school life and such... "First place, on a classroom wall Every turn of a face Can help to break the Fall from a domestic disgrace" It also goes on as the person telling themselves they have to be better, a "perfectionist"- if they don't do well, they'll just become a face in the crowd. Basically, someone thriving for positive attention that their own family can't give. "Be a perfectionist You're nothing if your just another" |
