Les Savy Fav – Sleepless in Silver Lake Lyrics 14 years ago
Definitely strikes me as a song about Los Angeles being a fairly shallow place. These lines all support that:

There's nothing pure here anymore
by the brightness of the day / you know that they'll evaporate
... and of course the lines about fake tits, bleached teeth, and devaluing human life (those kids'll kill ya cuz they can)

Pretty cool song.

Talking Heads – Life During Wartime Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the idea that this is all talking about a band is really interesting, but I never really interpreted it that way.

As a few others have said, this is literally stuff that occurs during wartime. People stock up on supplies, get paranoid, lose their identities, and don't have time for simple pleasures or day-to-day activities. The song paints a visual of war being everywhere and we're all desperately (and unsuccessfully) attempting to relocate in order to escape it.

Built to Spill – Distopian Dream Girl Lyrics 14 years ago
The first verse throws me off since it's really abstract. I feel like that verse was added as an afterthought, since it doesn't really jive with the other verses (which seem more lighthearted on the surface, with playful talk of step dads and wives). Maybe he got sick of trying to come up with anything meaningful and just threw some words together that rhymed :)

The Bowie verse is my favorite. Lodger is a freakin' great & overlooked album. There's a strong sense of teenage rebellion going on here in the lyrics, and he sings it perfectly.

The third verse about the man and the wife hints at some unspoken tension between the two ('hadn't thought of it for awhile', with 'it' being undefined, and 'penetrate my comfort zone'... may be sexual, who knows)

The chorus is probably the most part of the song lyrically for me. There's a really great set of contrasting thoughts arranged side-by-side: selfish ('Without me there's nothing, I'm the only thing that dies') and unselfish ('If it came down to your life or mine, I would do the stupid thing and let you keep on living'). I'd wager that he's saying, despite all the BS that goes into dealing with so many people, he's willing to overlook it and focus on the good things rather than the bad.

Arcade Fire – Wake Up Lyrics 14 years ago
one final comment, then i'll shut up :)

i just realized the oft overlooked line 'I can see where I am going When the reaper, he reaches and touches my hand' is most likely referring to the deaths of family members, and the self examination that goes hand in hand with such events.

considering that win had just gone through several funerals when writing this song, it makes sense that he would be in a reflective state, examining where his life was headed and the direction he was going as a person. basically, 'when the reaper' touched his hand (death impacted his life), he took a step back from his day-to-day craziness and realized where he was going, and it wasn't in a direction he liked!

Arcade Fire – Wake Up Lyrics 14 years ago
i think everyone is spot on with the first part: there are very clear themes of loss of innocence, the absence of emotion in adulthood (something filled up my heart with nothing), societal expectations (someone told me not to cry), and a call for change (wake up!)

the part that everyone seems to be getting hung up on is the last bit. here is my interpretation:

'if the children don't grow up, our bodies get bigger but our hearts get torn up': reiterating the message of 'wake up!', we grow up to be faulted & flawed individuals unless we make an effort to adjust and 'grow up' in a more metaphorical sense

'We're just a million little gods causing rainstorms turning every good thing to rust': reinforces the idea that our internalized flaws are pushed outward on society & the environment through our actions. our absence of emotion and hearts filled with nothing is in turn harmful to our neighborhoods, a major theme of the album.

'With my lightning bolts a-glowin' I can see where I am going you better look out below!': This line gives people the most trouble. In my interpretation, the narrator is saying that he sees himself headed down this path of destruction too. It is odd that they paired it with the most uplifting portion of the song musically (which I imagine is why people viewed the line as 'cant' rather than 'can'). I still think this line ties back to the 'I guess we'll just have to adjust' line... he realizes that he's just another angry rain god wrecking havoc on his neighborhood (look out below!) and knows he must change his ways.

The Killers – Spaceman Lyrics 17 years ago
Much better than most of Sam's Town - good to see them returning to their new wave roots. lead vocals sound great!

the whole spaceman thing is definitely bowie inspired in my opinion - others have pointed this out as well.

as far as an in depth meaning, i dont think there is one. its just a fun pop song.

Love – A Message To Pretty Lyrics 17 years ago
i think the posted lyrics are slightly off:

people try to tell me
what they think is right
i dont listen to them
don't know day from night

i go thru life searchin'
tryin to find the one
i go slip slip
you go slip slip away

and i dont need you to help me find my way
i can make it if i just dont see your face

(lisa)?!? had a problem
didn't know what to do
now I've got no problems
all I had was you

yes ill keep on searchin
& tryin to find the one
cuz i go slip slip
you go slip slip away

and i dont need you to help me find my way
i can make it if i just dont see your face

meaning: this song appears to be from the perspective of someone who has recently broken up with his girlfriend.

the line "i can make it if i just dont see your face" seems to imply time will heal his wounds. additionally there are lines concerning his continual search for someone to fill the hole in his heart that imply the narrator has recently ended a relationship of some sort.

the beginning verse certainly fits this mindset - the narrator is clearly lost and friends are offering advice on how to cope with the loss but the union of old continues to "slip slip away".

the line "and i dont need you to help me find my way" & "i can make it if i just dont see your face" is a wonderful juxtaposition of two different mindsets after a breakup - the former of spite and the latter of partial regret.

Talking Heads – Artists Only Lyrics 17 years ago
oh man this was one of my favorites for years.

the lyrics are incredibly simple but i'd imagine its a lighthearted criticism of the pretentiousness of some artsy/free-spirited folks.

the lines "I don't have to prove...that I am creative!" and "You can't see it 'til it's finished" certainly seem sarcastic and mocking of the artist's arrogant attitude. great song.

The Jesus Lizard – Monkey Trick Lyrics 17 years ago
evokes images of organized crime.

like most jesus lizard songs, i'm not sure there's much of a deep meaning to take away from it, it just sounds cool.

The Unicorns – Tuff Ghost Lyrics 17 years ago
whoa whoa whoa

as much as i enjoyed the essay, i'm gonna have to agree to disagree that this song is about jesus. just because one line (the 3 days part) may be misconstrued as jesus, i dont see any trace of this being tied to the rest of the lyrics.

my own interpretation: the 'ghost' is an emotionally drained & selfish person who puts on a front to seem tough and untouchable. obviously he is seen in a negative light by the narrator because he can see right through his phoniness.

the rest of it is just witty ways of describing ghosts: "go for a swim, i don't get wet".

it's 1 part fun, 1 part serious. classic unicorns track.
