| Blind Melon – All That I Need Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I think the first two stanzas can be interpreted in a number of ways, but I personally think they were written quite literally. The second half of the song to me is clearly about drugs, most likely Hoon's heroin addiciton: "It will make you feel good, over my shoulder It'll get me down and got me tied up 'Till I grow older, but feel me inside of you Like you want it to" 'Over my shoulder' possibly a refference to the phrase 'monkey on my back' which is common metaphor for narcotic addition. This would also tie into the following lines, about his life being controlled by drugs, especially, until he grew older. In this way, 'feel me inside of you' would again be reffering to drug, likely heroin, use. The proceeding lines to me also follow the theme of addiction overcoming his life. Though more of a stretch, to me 'But I'll never smile the way, that I did like that day' reffers to how good the first high was, and how it has been downhill from there. It's ended with hopeful lines said in a despairing way, which is heard in a few of their other songs. |
