I'm going to go out on a limb here and say this isn't directly about the Kent State shootings. I know the original song is, but Sandra Scheuer wasn't part of the protest. She was on her way to class and was hit in the neck with a stray bullet, so it seems odd that the band would think she "had it coming". Maybe this is applying Scheuer's misfortune to a present day situation that the singer has encountered. Kind of like a metaphor for getting caught in the middle of a conflict. |

| Art lost both his brother (heroin overdose) and his girlfriend (suicide) when he was an adolescent. I think this is what the song is about. How tragic events in life can stay in the back of our heads and linger even years down the road. An absolute brilliant song. Some of the rawest, most heartfelt lyrics and vocals I've heard in a song. | |

| makes more sense to me than it being about dogs. if you listen to more of the eels music, a lot of it is about one or the other. i'd be interested in hearing your interpretation omgwow. or did you just want to go on an anti-drug rant? people do drugs and then write songs about them. get over it. | |

my interpretation is more along the lines of benjay's. this is a very sad song and while i think depression plays into it, the actual monster itself is heroin use/addiction, as E has admitted to using it before and would explain the line- She will always be the only thing That comes between me and the awful sting That comes from living in a world that's so damn mean It wouldn't make sense that depression helps him make it through, but drugs would be a strong possibility. |
