When you said that the wall of books was a metaphor, I suddenly got a picture of two people in bed reading because they'd rather do that than talk to each other. Just an image that came to mind when I read your post! |

I think this song is about metaphorical distance between two people. how they drift further and further from each other. 'The Atlantic was born today and I'll tell you how': I think that the atlantic as a massive space is used to represent how distant they are now. that though they are so far apart now, it started from something smaller. 'I thought it less like a lake and more like a moat': Again like what many here have said, the imagery of a moat is used to indicate a barrier; a way to keep a person out. i think at this point, it's suggested that the person he's singing about shut him out. 'The rhythm of my footsteps crossing flatlands to your door Have been silenced forevermore' : I love this image. of how he treks across plains just to get to her door. and now he can't anymore because of the water. 'The distance is quite simply much too far for me to row It seems farther than ever before': something that i quite liked from the other interpretations was the idea of how he's the only doing the work. how he's actively trying to row to her but she's too far away and he can't bridge the gap on his own. 'I need you so much closer': this line just kills me :( |
