| I always thought this was one of their best songs. Where so many of their songs seem emotionally flat, this one is delivered with a lot of emotion and sorrow. Such excitement of the reunion with the past and such deep disappointment at the change, made even sadder by reflecting on his now empty anticipation. | |

tsreyb... I, too, feel it's a strange wording but I came up with this: To "lend" is an expectation that the same thing (or an equivalent) will be returned. This relates to The Golden Rule where our (presumably kind) actions toward others are similarly returned. So, I'd say the speaker in the song is asking Alfie why "the strong" would help the weak if there is nothing valuable the weak can provide in return. |

I've often wondered about the bridge verse: "Now and then I call your name And suddenly your face appears But it's just a crazy game When it ends it ends in tears" Does this mean they repeatedly get together again for a bit but inevitably break up? Or is this just imaginary (making it all the more pathetic and sad)? |
