Grizzly Bear – Alligator Lyrics 17 years ago
Why should everything be so close to reality? Don't we think that with the grandiouse nature of the music should insite some kind of recogntion of the mystic or mythical--hell, something we cannot name? Like "it's no use, give it up, this is life and this is love" is an Alligator as meaningful metaphor doesn't scream something off in our brains like what a crappy metaphor! The irony is stupendous! Just listen to the music; I swear it is there! (Oh, and is everyone listening to the Choir Version?)

Frightened Rabbit – The Modern Leper Lyrics 17 years ago
gparkla what I think you miss is the transition from the leper imagery to himself as singer / songwriter / performer. But before I get ahead of myself, I agree totally with what you are saying. Just not in the same terms. My point: "you must love a masochist" is in reference to all of us (including the writer / singer / performer AND LISTENER). For example,
"Well I'm lying on the ground now
Walking through the only door
Well I have lost my eye sight
Like I said I would
But I still know
And that is you in front of me"
ends with
"Doesn't that make us the perfect pair
Just you and me
We'll start again
And you can tell me all about what you did today
What you did today."

My Brightest Diamond – We Were Sparkling Lyrics 17 years ago
Innocent childhood love, I think, is exactly what this song is about as well; however, I think that the question then should extend itself into for whom is the love for. I know there are no biographical references, no pronouns, no hints or suggestions as to who she is speaking to. Hence, and I hate to say hence (because it so open ended) but I am thinking mythical here: if not a god figure, atleast a diety of some sort. The tree is a homage. The tree is light and gifted. And as sacrafice, as first suggested, it is a attempt to get back to simplicity and innocence. In any way one may chose to follow that path.

The National – Gospel Lyrics 17 years ago
I think I would agree with zidane. Specifically behind the imagery of "holiday lights your garden." I love the idea of coupling, and just the pureness of a "housewarming" gift. However, where Matt goes askew is where he meets the concept of the whole album: it is in the exact dichotomy of togetherness that we have dislocation. It is in trying to save face that we un"tie our strings."
