Xiu Xiu – Support Our Troops OH! (Black Angels OH!) Lyrics 16 years ago
I feel that it is juvenile to prescribe something as "attention grabbing waste." Artists of this kind think their words through a lot, and it is extremely disrespectful to describe it as "attention grabbing waste" when it's obviously deeply personal just like 100% of his other songs.

The Shins – Young Pilgrims Lyrics 17 years ago
So I was reading through these comments, and my interpretation is sort of a medium between Jimmifrisbee and dantealighieri1234.

I think the beginning might be a reference to the way in which one becomes seduced by these thoughts; a cold and wet November dawn, etc. Being alone or just pondering and actually wondering in general can often lead you down these paths, or down this "Winterslide" that sort of makes you realize how meaningless everything really is. "Chutes Too Narrow" I feel is stating that when you think these sort of existentialist thoughts, you end up sometimes either A) being depressed/down or discouraged by these thoughts (falling short of potential) or B) you often do things knowing the bad or undesirable consequences, but do them anyways because you realize the lack of meaning in life.

He learned fast how to keep his head up... Just saying the same thing as before. Sometimes he just wants to destroy everything, but he has learned to control these thoughts.

The middle part is probably the best part; young pilgrims is a reference to the way they have been teaching children forever to gain their "courage" and positive outlooks from fake stories like Thanksgiving and God. If there is any diversion on my part, it is the stress on religion; I feel that this song wasn't really intended to be a complete reference to religion. I think it's just about society in general INCLUDING religion.

Obviously, he suggests this latter view because it's easier and won't make you fall into a "winter-slide." A simple epitaph.

In reality, there are no flaws, no design. We have been taught this "design" forever, but in reality it's not really there.

Truly a song that can help ANYONE through times of identity struggles, questioning struggles, or simply the dreariness of the "winters" of your life. :D

Foals – Cassius Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm 99% sure that they're talking about the famous Gaius Cassius Longinus from the story/history of Julius Caesar, who was one of the original conspirators against him. Cassius was always shady with Caesar because of all the things that Caesar did to him. After the conspiracy, Cassius fled to like Syria or something because Marc Antony came into power (a friend of Caesar). Cassius hoped to return to Rome eventually (I think), but Brutus (another trusted conspirator) and him were hated by the triumverate and a lot of political leaders in Rome. Cassius ended up having a battle with Marc Antony's army and lost, but Brutus won a simultaneous battle somewhere else. Cassius, however, thought all hope was gone, so he killed himself.

It's a lot more complicated than that, but if you wanna know the whole story, either read "Julius Caesar" by Shakespeare (although that is not the full story) or go to wikipedia and look up cassius.

Yeah, the reason they keep saying second best is because Cassius CONSTANTLY tried to rise above other people, but was always "just a right hand man" I guess you could say.

Sucks to be him.

Oh yeah, and they'rd from Oxford, England? So I'm really not sure that they were talking about slavery... But it's possible.

Foals – Cassius Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm pretty sure Foals don't think about extremely deep content behind their songs. I think they probably just read "Julius Caesar" one time and decided to write a song about how much it would suck to be Cassius.

I'm still confused about the "lighthouse" bit though.

And wtf; why is the whole first page of comments about the justification of using animal parts in art?

The Shins – Phantom Limb Lyrics 17 years ago
OKAY, so I've been reading through all of these song meanings, and blah blah blah obviously have come to the definite conclusion of the lesbian couple.

But I didn't understand at first why "Phantom Limb" was such a funny title, and why people were laughing at it.

AND I FINALLY GOT IT!

So for those of you that don't understand (I don't know if it's mentioned in here the actual couple of meanings behind the title), obviously 'phantom limb' is a condition where amputee's can still feel their body parts when they aren't there.

meaning #1: The two girls are like phantom limbs in their society because they are outcasts in their society and aren't actually there... blah blah blah

meaning #2: Lesbians don't have... male sexual reporoductive organs. I hope that's enough explanation... ha.

Modest Mouse – Steam Engenius Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't know whether I agree that he's solely talking about Religion or not. I almost think he's just talking about the repetativeness or lack of diversity of life in general. We are programmed to be like we are with our language and stuff like that, and we don't know anymore what we'd be like if we didn't have any of these things.

"Like a rickshaw pulled by another rickshaw" I think is referring how we enter this life with strings attached, and we follow the lead of everyone else. I think the definition of stasis that he's most likely referring to is the biological term: a period of little or no evolutionary change in a species. We are programmed this way, and instead of evolving, we just take care of things ourselves. I don't know. I almost think sometimes in this song he's referring to the fact that humans are almost becoming Gods in a way because we made these things like the steam engenius. Soon enough, we'll be able to produce things (like robots that cry and have hearts) that will be like humans. We evolve from apes, to men, to Gods eventually.
