i feel like this song is something Jon Mess wrote real high thinking about how he see's all these perfect people-- ("marbles") who can make their own rules in their own perfect world-- ("she's a referee") and how he's just him.. leaning towards suicide.
--"Jon Mess you should own a gun"
--"Feel the room filling up with smoke"
--"What's it like to be an atheist? Are you okay with suicide?"
The second verse is a little off for me on what it all means, "I prefer wood to linoleum"??

i am inclined to think it is "beautiful lies" for my own interpretation of the song. I'd like to think the song is about the guys' struggle to find the right person for them in their life. They've been all across the world meeting people/girls/friends/fans that perhaps only continue to let them down, leaving them to wonder if all the "diamonds" are dead and gone in the sky. |

on their 4/20 acoustic webcast, im pretty sure he said this song was based on a dream anthony had about killing someone. then i think as the song draws to and end he begins to somewhat relate it to something real -- "All my life passing before my eyes. All the time I was awake"

that or in continuation-- that its a relationship going nowhere "too many shades of gray" meaning multiple things just building up over time. nothing progressive is happening its just the same stagnant nothing day after day meaning what happened yesterday is going to be today, tomorrow and the next day where nothing is getting better
love the song though. whole album is perfect |
