| I see this as him being the 'other man' and luring a girl away from someone who loves her less (the emptier boat) and urging her to give up on a dead relationship (the dead dog metaphor). Perhaps it is the same girl as in the following song (Red Rabbits). I see this song as being more emotionally charged, while the other is more sexual. Except that the start of this song suggests they may be on the brink of their first sexual encounter. | |

I always thought this song was about how transient 'love' can be, especially when we're young. You can fall for one person, but then fall for another (there are so many of you out there for rent). To me this is a guy who has had a brief relationship with a girl which meant more to her than it did to him and he is trying to let her down gently. He sees that she is vulnerable and her past difficulties in life mean that she is reacting badly to this. She is emotional (you have let your heart decide) and he wants her to think about this rationally and be strong. He sees that she has fought to hold on to previous relationships by changing her own character but he thinks that if she just lets go of this relationship she will soon forget about him and move on. The phrase "You are not some saint who's above, Giving someone a stroll through the flowers" could be him pointing out to her that in the past she might also have accidentally led people to think she cared more for them than she did, reinforcing how normal this situation is and how she will get through this. |

| To me, this is someone who has trouble expressing themselves and is also overwhelmed by constant noise of the world. He wants this person to stay and be with him, to comfort him, but quietly, without needing to talk. Just being there, and understanding without words. Walking in silence, but not walking AWAY in silence needn't be a contradiction. | |
| R.E.M. – Nightswimming Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night. I'm not sure all these people understand. It's not like years ago, The fear of getting caught, of recklessness and water. They cannot see me naked. These things, they go away, replaced by everyday Nightswimming, I always thought this was talking about how nightswimming/sex used to be meaningful, rare and exciting. something you only did with someone you really trusted. But now everyone does it with everybody and noone really cares who sees them or knows about it. He's sort of lamenting how something that was so precious to him now seems commonplace. |

| The Shins – New Slang Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I think it's about unrequited love, and how that changed him. Meeting her awakened passions and ideas in him, but because it was unrequited it also opened up his eyes to the negative things in the world. He is talking wistfully about what might have been if she had loved him and how they might have been blissfully happy and how he was also happy when he was young and naive before he knew she existed. | |
