Pinkerton didn't do well because it wasn't as commercial. It's darker, and deals with some intensely creepy awkwardness, which is why it has such a cult following. Anyway, it's about him getting some broken english letter from a Japanese fan. He becomes emotionally attached to her even though he's never met her, imagines her masturbating, sniffs at her envelope, etc, and ends up writing this song about her. Weezer really took off after the blue album, and in the song he attaches himself to the fan because he's longing for something more. It is obviously about escape. Dropping whatever is going on in his life now to be free and do what he truly wants. It's a recurring theme in Rivers' lyrics. He constantly makes references to getting away, escaping, running, resting, being apart from lame ass society in general in order to be happy. |
