Barenaked Ladies – The Old Apartment Lyrics

In one of the podcasts they made while making Barenaked Ladies Are Me, Steve and Ed were talking about this song and apparently the guy and his girlfriend did just move somewhere else and didn't break up and it's about not wanting to see what somebody else has done to someplace where you've made so many memories. Throughout the song the speaker is remembering things about the place (being broke, punching a hole in the wall, breaking a bone, etc.), which things the new tenants changed (painting the walls, changing the locks, cleaning the floor, getting rid of the old phone on the wall), and by seeing other people do things with what's left of these memories (they covered the hole, they're using the same dish rack and mousetrap) and generally changing what he did to his place, he wants it all to be the same again. The new tenants are changing things without knowing the sentimental value and are in a way destroying that value and those memories, and the speaker wants to have those memories and value back. (I want them back)

Nickel Creek – Helena Lyrics

When I heard this song, I thought it was the the narrator is in a relationship and has an affair with Helena who he falls in love with and wants to leave this other girl for her, but he doesn't want the break up to be his fault so he asks Helena to wait until this other girl does something wrong. When he asks Helena she gets pissed and breaks up with the guy and says shes going to tell this other girl everything. In the end he says relationships suck, he doesn't need either one of them because he can go get girls wherever he wants.

Barenaked Ladies – Crazy Lyrics

I think this song is saying "We're all crazy, different, and quirky to some degree, that just part of who we are and of being human." The speaker is "crazy" but so is the listener and it's nothing clinical (I'm not a manic depressive, paranoid or schizophrenic so I don't need your advice.) so it's something completely normal and natural. It's saying that this kind of crazy is just being different from others and that's completely fine.

I think the line "Give me one more day, and still I'll never do anything." means that this guy is saying that even though he could have been famous and everything and is kinda annoyed that he isn't, in reality, he's content with what he has and who he is.

I think that in the last part of the song the person gets back to normal by taking a step back and cracking jokes about what he was thinking. "Hey, I was going to leave because I was sad about being lazy, but I'm too lazy to leave, ha ha" Sorry if that was a bit confusing...

The meaning the band gives isn't necessarily the only meaning. I think that in this case the band is giving the simplest meaning and leaving the deeper stuff to the fans. I think this song is about loving yourself, both physically and emotionally.

I really like the chorus of this song. I aways get the idea of not letting insults and bad things being said about you get to you from it. Kind of "You're saying all this bad things about me but I'm not going to listen nor feel bad" For example, at camp, whenever this complete jerk in my cabin started messing around with me, I just started humming this song and ignored him.

I think that part of the reason the story is being told by the lighthouse is to kind of say "things keep going and move on". This tragic story happened and the keeper and his finance are dead, but the lighthouse keeps going on and warning sailors even though it was hurt by the deaths.
