| Subtle – A Tale Of Apes I Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| The ape is a human rapper, the narrator, and perhaps Doseone himself. He is still just a normal guy with a normal rap act, something about losing his lucky jacket and how he is going to exact revenge. Then all of a sudden something clicks. There is a change within the narrator, as if he has reach a higher level of consciousness. This alters the course of events in the universe and begins the story to be described throughout the album. Back in the normal earth world the narrator begins to wonder during his act why everyone likes it. It is simple, empty, materialistic, animal-like, etc. He operates on such a level that "everything is empty and it runneth over" sounds slow, like individual letters. He sees how the word just kind of "cuts clean" out of his mouth, produced easily like any simple movement. This realization, though, sets off the "fear fire" because the narrator also realizes that his existence is tied to this simple human world. His life is just on the edge of being totally dependent on the merch booth. Either his career takes off and he becomes a famous, successful musician, or his career dies, he becomes another washed up act trapped in middle class white society. Both of these options are unsavory to the narrator-become-Hour Hero Yes, as most of the following songs describe. | |
