This is not a U2 rip off at all. It sounds nothing like the Unforgettable Fire. It sounds more like U2's Zooropa, somewhat in music and quite a bit in lyrics if anything. Inspired, maybe, but not a rip-off. "I need a compass, draw me a map" - Sqaure One "I have no compass, I have no map, and I have no reasons, no reasons to get back" - Zooropa |

I highly doubt it has anything to do with discrimination against homosexuality... It's about fate-bound lovers in Japan... Sounds reminiscient to Clocks to me. Especially if you've seen Clocks live during Twisted Logic - the drums sound a lot like they did in the beginning at Toronto at the beginning of Clocks. I have a feeling this might be a single. Coldplay have always had hit singles that coincidently always were track number five (Yellow, Clocks, Talk). Coldplay's lucky number. ;D |

I agree with the people that said it has to do with the king of France, namely Louis XVI. But I also see the link that could make the song about Jesus, too. I used to rule the world (Not the whole world, unless He was Jesus, but let Chris embelish a little) Seas would rise when I gave the word (Not that powerful, again, unless this is Jesus, but I like the lyrics this way anyway) Now in the morning I sleep alone Sweep the streets I used to own (Although I feel the song could be about Jesus or King Louis XVI, neither Jesus or King Louis XVI were left alive after they were overthrown. So maybe this refers to the king that was overthrown in the July Revolution of 1830 who slept in the streets.) I used to roll the dice Feel the fear in my enemy’s eyes (King Louis XVI and his wife supposedly gambled a lot) Listened as the crowd would sing Now the old king is dead long live the king (In Louis XVI case, this could because his father didn't get to rule that long, and his grandfather was a horrible king, while Louis XVI was really a good king. Then again, maybe it's the king that took over in July of 1830?) One minute I held the key Next the walls were closed on me And I discovered that my castles stand Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand (King Louis XVI fell apart around him, and he had to leave his castle to run from the mob.) I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing Roman cavalry (Catholic?) choirs are singing (Could it be that Jesus heard the bells of Jerusalem and the choirs of Rome?) Be my mirror my sword and shield (Sounds like talking to a lover like some said) Missionaries in a foreign field (Jesus sent off the Apostles throughout the world) For some reason I can't explain Once you'd gone there was never Never an honest word (Does sound like he's talking to a lover, and it could because Louis XVI's advisors lied to him about things) And that was when I ruled the world It was a wicked and wild wind Blew down the doors to let me in (Sounds like the king was kicked out and somehow let back in) Shattered windows and the sound of drums People couldn’t believe what I’d become (Could be when Louis XVI was executed. They had drums rolling at his death.) Revolutionaries wait For my head on a silver plate (When Louis XVI was put to the guillotine) Just a puppet on a lonely string Oh who would ever want to be king? (Louis XVI was sort of used as a puppet by his advisors) I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing Roman cavalry (Catholic?) choirs are singing Be my mirror my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field For some reason I can’t explain I know St Peter will (won’t?) call my name (With "won't", it could be the king thinking he won't go to heaven, or Jesus knowing St. Peter would deny him thrice. But the line "For some reason I can't explain," gives it a feel of "will." You would know for some reason why St. Peter wouldn't call your name, but if you thought you failed, it would make sense if some you couldn't explain you made it to heaven.) Never an honest word But that was when I ruled the world (Again, could be because his advisors lied to him) Hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing Roman cavalry (Catholic?) choirs are singing Be my mirror my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field For some reason I can’t explain I know St Peter will (won’t?) call my name Never an honest word But that was when I ruled the world Overall taken as a whole, it probablypoints to an earthly Catholic monarch that was overthrown, probably Louis XVI. Louis XVI was made to look bad by Robes Pierre (that sick pyscho, I hate him), but he was a good king, but he was manipulated and perhaps Chris thinks he blamed himself for that. The song sounds a bit upbeat and tragic at the same time, and even sympathetic, so I think Chris saw that this monarch was really good, but had a terrible end.) |
