I like it -- good "out of the box" interpretation. The lyrics are pretty oblique so they could mean any number of things, could very well mean what you say.... |

ummm, did he kill her?? Was murder the "cardinal sin" he mentions? Is that why changed his name, is always on the run, checking his rearview mirror, and has bloodstains on his hands? Or is that all just figurative? I guess it's just open to the listener's interpretation. Tom Waits is a freakin' lyrical genius.
I can relate to this song on a certain level -- my ex wife and I were married on Valentines Day. |

Just about being with someone and fully enjoying the togetherness. Maybe taking some kind of drug trip together, or just being outside on a beautiful day enjoying gorgeous scenery. Whichever, I certainly wish I personally could feel this way more often... |

Yeah, I'll go along with Palladian -- to me it's just basically about being in your early twenties and enjoying life and not thinking about any consequences. Everyone deserves to feel this way for a little while in their life. I know I did. Then everything just got so damn complicated.... |

Hell, I'll explain it anyway. You are miserable and you think your life is horrible. You are dreaming of a life where everything is wonderful (verses 1,2,3). In this other life, all the things that happen that make you miserable in your current life don't ever happen (verse 4). But no, that is not your life -- your real life is the only life you have (chorus). And, there could just as easily be another life where things are worse than you could ever imagine in your current life (verse 5), and there is no hope for improving things. Your real life is neither the utopia of verses 1-3 nor the dismal hopelessness of verse 5. You need to stop dreaming of other lives, get off your butt and make your things better for yourself, those you care about, and the world as a whole (verse 6). It is within your power, so do it. |

So what's this song about? To me it's about a relationship that went sour a while ago, and now all the angry words and fighting and finger pointing are in the past. All that is left is pain and regret and sadness, and a striving to make amends and to be at peace with both the good and bad that went on in the relationship. |

And there ain't nothing like regret
To remind you you're alive
Those are the most amazing lyrics. It's ridiculous how much I'm feeling them now. |

But wherever I have gone
I was sure to find myself there
You can run all your life
But not go anywhere
Those lines are utterly brilliant. You can try to escape your pain by traveling, finding new friends, taking drugs, etc. But you can't . Because you can't escape from yourself. |

I know how he feels, too. He is a long way from getting over her, and he know it. The lyrics are all about how he is "most of the time", but between the lines, the song is actually about the other 10% of the time when it all falls apart. Been there, done that. Hell, I'm there now. |
