Static-X – The Only Lyrics 16 years ago
I read that this song is about Orwell's 1984? There are no specific references in the lyrics to the novel, but you can relate the feelings of oppression and "divorced reality" to the book. I read this on Wikipedia, and there was no citation, so it may be wrong. Any thoughts?

The Band – We Can Talk Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm not really sure about the lyrics but I think it might be about racism? I think The Band are saying that even though slavery has ended - "there's no need to slave, the whip is in the grave" - racism still needs to be overcome in the U.S.

They highlight a reluctance to talk about racism - "It seems to me we've been holding something underneath our tongues" and point towards the south of America as a epicentre of racism - "I'd rather be burned in Canada than to freeze here in the south." Despite this, The Band urges everyone to "talk about it now."

But anyways, this song is irrelevant now. Obama has been elected, so racism is over, right? :P

Nice interpretation hariko. I concur with pretty much all of these points.

Vampire Weekend – Walcott Lyrics 17 years ago
Hahaha, I actually wish we had towns sounding more like English towns here in Australia. I wish we had our own Grimsby, Scunthorpe, and Luton and all the other teams I see my team (Yeovil) versing in the lower leagues. Instead we get shitty towns like Wagga Wagga, Wooloomaloo and Coolangatta.

Wolf Parade – California Dreamer Lyrics 17 years ago
The song is about a guy who loves a girl. The girl leaves to pursue a singing career in L.A, while the guy stays in their hometown.

"And I think I might have heard you on the radio. But the radio waves were like snow" alludes to his opinion that her fame and fortune from singing will fade just like her figure in the dying snow mentioned in the opening lines.

The guy is still in his hometown "singing songs you wrote" and making "angels in the snow," but she has left him behind and thrown away the "winter clothes I made for you."

The song does reference the classic song California Dreaming a few times. Spencer states "I would have left if you'd just asked me to or come to me before the preacher." In California Dreaming, the protagonist is stuck in a similar romantic position, but his local preacher "likes the cold; he knows I'm gonna stay (in the hometown)."

Spencer questions the vapidness of Hollywood, mockingly asking "do the young stay pretty, do the pretty stay quick?" and opining that "the creatures get younger and younger," i.e. stars just get replaced by younger, prettier stars when they pass their use by date. Never-the-less, Spencer tells his California Dreamer lover that "I'll be around, I'll be around, I'll be around, like a teenager in town."

Radiohead – Weird Fishes/Arpeggi Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with skenne8. It's about suicide. His loved one has recently died/committed suicide and he is contemplating it himself. At first he is undecided ("Why should I stay here? Why should I stay?"), but then he decides to fall off the edge of the earth. I think Thom is saying that we can only escape our problems when we hit rock bottom.

Dead Prez – Hip hop Lyrics 17 years ago
Heard this for this first time the other day in Chapelle's Block Party. When they rap this bit to the crowd: "Uh.
Who shot Biggie Smalls?
If we don't get them, they gonna get us all
I'm down for runnin' up on them crackers in they city hall"
is just brilliant. It's good to see some hip-hop with some actual meaningful lyrics.

I can't believe no one has commented on this song! It's awesome!

The lyrics aren't much chop but the tune is brilliant. Every time I hear this song I think of cruising down the street with the windows down and the bass pumping.

Killing Joke – The Death And Resurrection Show Lyrics 17 years ago
You guys are spot on with the meanings. The first verse is all about the showmanship involved in the death of Jesus, hence the "Show" of Death and Resurrection.

He then moves forward to judgement day.:
"And the day will come, Before the lights go out, Who will you turn to, Who will you turn to."

He then points out how the story of Jesus is similar to others in history:
"Choose the crucifixion, Or Osiris slain, Recurring themes, time again."

He also points out the lies and deceit of Christianity: "Oh how ingenious the centuries of lies," "Everything im taught, amounts to nought"

In the end he says that all "Souls are recycled in the death and resurrection show."

Lightspeed Champion – Midnight Surprise Lyrics 17 years ago
Hahaha, I was reading the lyrics and I was like 'wait a minute, is this about wet dreams?' Then he came out with lines like "night time, palm luxuries which I mistake for life" and "Wake up, smell the semen" and I thought 'perhaps it is.'

Pretty weird song. I think it's about his self-loathing and longing to be with the girl he likes but is too afraid to pursue. Instead he partakes in "Ejacquantumbreeze!" Haha. Pretty good song though.

Ida Maria – Better When You're Naked Lyrics 17 years ago
Pretty straightforward meaning. Girl meets a guy at a party and is focused on lust ("OK, you're kind of sexy, But you're not really special") but is awkward.

Catchy songs and yeh I agree about the Tommy Pickles thing!

The Posies – I Guess You're Right Lyrics 17 years ago
How has no one commented on this song yet?! It's great!!

As for the meaning: I think it's about a guy proving his love to a girl. I think they had an argument and he is tired of her dominating him. He constantly repeats "I guess you're right" and says "I guess you're smart." He is doing everything he can to prove that he loves her and is committed to her: "Take my desire, take it all, take it as proof, Take me in this life I've taken you." Great song with great melody.

Great song. Heard it first on Live at Abbey Road.

The first verse is beautiful how it has metaphors for a map.

Love it when the beat picks up in the chorus.

Muse – Supermassive Black Hole Lyrics 17 years ago
I hated this song too at first but it grew on me. I think Fortunatus nailed the meaning of the song on page 1 here. He's been sucked in by a girl only to realise that she's a superficial bitch.

Glaciers melting in the dead of night... one of the coolest lines of the song.

In the second line isn't it "Ooh, baby, can you hear me moan?" instead of mourn?

Muse – Starlight Lyrics 17 years ago
Obviously a love song. I think Matt might be drawing on his personal experiences and how touring can take him away from the one he loves:
"Far away
This ship is taking me far away
Far away from the memories
Of the people who care if I live or die."
I think he also questions whether he should continue touring at the cost of his relationship:
"I dont know if it’s worth it anymore"

"Let's conspire to ignite
All the souls that would die just to feel alive"
Cool line; not exactly sure what it means though.

Muse – Take a Bow Lyrics 17 years ago
The lyrics aren't very subtle. Not a great song. Pretty cool beat when it breaks out into this part though:
"Now freedoms concealing itself
What we've become
Is contrary to what we want
Take a bow"

At the Drive-In – Sleepwalk Capsules Lyrics 17 years ago
This is a really cool song. It's about the government's control over your life. In the first verse it says about how the youth is muted :
" kindergarten nap nap time
pacifier pacifies"
There are also suggestions of a police state 1984 style:
"all utensils are fixed on you"
"cranes perched in scows(wtf does scows mean btw?), in the windows they would peek"
"snuck inside the sound of sleep"

When I read Guillotine of Love's comment I initially dismissed it. But when I thought about it I guess it could mean that and what I said. I don't know that much about Caesar and how he died, though...

"and let the puppet strings sag" - one of my fave lines
Don't really understand the Lazurus bit. I know who Lazurus is but I don't get it in the context of this song.
