as a somewhat recovering speed addict, i think this tune is about amphetamines. i'd analyze every line but it's pointless - if you've ever done amphetamines you understand it on a whole different level. |

i think this song is jeff singing to himself, deciding to go into the 'hiding' he is in now - if you listen to the 'conversation with robert schneider' on the 'beauty' ep it's very revealing and sort of explains why he's not performing. he's "comely", he'll be with himself when he loses his breath. he's talking about how it's probably not healthy that he's fallen in love with anne frank, the pretty, bright and bubbly terrible scene that's having her effect (doing her thing) on his heart (chest). he thinks his friends are all sycophants, letting him make a fool of himself by letting the world see his vulnerability, how he was so moved by a book most of us read in middle school (not to say he shouldn't have been, i reacted similarly to it.) with this in mind the song becomes more clearly autobiographical. the significance of the goldaline section i think is him comforting this dream, the ghost of anne frank in his mind that's become like his conjoined twin - the freezing to death in the forest is a metaphor for his hiding away from the world |
