Okay, i see now the kid/father scene in this song and I'll listen to it differently next time, but up until now this is how I saw it: You're in love with someone, but they are calous to your feelings because they have been hurt before and dont want to be hurt again. "You have learned in time that you musy be cruel," proves that. "I'll have to wait to get the best of you." captures the frustration of knowing that someone truly loving and beautiful hides behind an exterior of cold cruelness. "Poison in everything you say" is that they cant be nice in fear of letting you in. "Wonder what difference does it make, either way?" Is that, what if they werent so cruel, could you love them then? Or is it something more keeping you apart? "Where did you learn it's either him or you?" Meaning staying to yourself and being successful on your own or surrender yourself to someone and risk being vunerable to them your whole life. Maybe I think all this because it's exactly what happend with me and my ex. After we broke up he turned cruel, trying to keep me from getting into him again. This song turns me into and instant tear factory!! Especially the BOOM right after "...it's either him or you" THAT... then the crescendo, gives me CHILLS!! |

One of the best songs EVER. Guster ROX UR SOX HARD!!! Though a select few at my school have even heard of Guster (which is , ya, my circle of friends), we decided at graduation that THIS should be our class song. It sums up high school life at it's end perfectly! So so so so so true. Guster, I am in love with you. Marry me!!!! |

It seems to be about obsession, too, with fantasy- with a person who can fulfill your every wish whenever you want it to, and realizing they arent real and hating life for it. |
