| The Shins – Know Your Onion! Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I think this song is about a socially awkward teenager, for, whatever reason, has commitment issues. Sounds prototypical, but no one mentioned it yet. Shut out, pimpled and angry. I quietly tied all my guts into knots. Gave up on trying to make them, I figured it'd take them too long to look up and besides... -The first line is a pretty quick description of out main character. He's obviously upset about something, and from the second lines, we can assume he is trying to make a team or club. 'Trying to make them'? Like 'make the team'? But because he is such an awkward, self conscious person, he decides it would take to long for them (as in maybe the coach or the like) to even acknowledge he was there. And even then it's unlikely he'd make it, so he decides to not even trying or 'gave up on trying to make them'. It was undeniably clear to me I don't know why When every other part of life seemed locked behind shutters I knew what worthless dregs we all are then. -He then realizes that when every other aspect of your life is inside your house alone, 'locked behind shutters', we become worthless. So, giving up on making whatever team has only added to his feelings of insecurity and isolation. lucked out and found my favorite records lying in wait at the birmingham mall. the songs the i heard, the occasional book were the only fun I ever took. and I got on with making myself. the trick is just making yourself. -Since our main character doesn't have a club or team, no hobbies, and apparently no friends, he sits around listening to music and reading. This is his entire life, he doesn't go on dates or to parties, 'were the only fun I ever took'. He 'got on with making [himself]', in other words, he spent his days thinking about who he was as a person alone. He is trying to figure out who he is. To 'make' his own identity. but when they're parking their cars on your chest you've still got a view of the summer sky to make it hurt twice when your restless body caves to its whims and suddenly struggles to take flight... -Despite trying to 'find himself', people are obviously crushing him or 'parking cars on your chest'. He tries to find a positive to it, and then realizes that when you try and run away from your problems, it only ends up hurting more because you'll have wished you've done something. The 'restless body caving into it's whims' is a young man becoming to scared to confront whatever problem he has socially and is just leaving to be by himself, to 'take flight'. three thousand miles north east i left all my friends at the morning bus stop shaking their heads. "what kind of life you dream of? you're allergic to love." -This goes in with the previous lines. This boy has abandoned his friends by themselves because he got upset with something and wasn't emotionally mature enough to deal with it. Even they start to realize that he needs to learn to get along with people, and say that he's 'allergic to love'. That line pretty much means this kid is scared to form a meaningful relationship, if you view love in a non-romantic way. yes i know but i must say in my own defense it's been undeniable dear to me, i don't know why when every other part of life seemed locked behind shutters i knew the worthless dregs we are, the selfless, loving saints we are, the melting, sliding dice we've always been. -Note how the singer sings "what kind of life you dream of? you're allergic to love", he's making his voice higher pitched to make fun or patronize these friends. This kid is really offended by their analysis, but can't express it. So he retaliates 'I must say in my own defense' (These are friends, you don't defend yourself from friends). He goes on to say that being a bit of a loner has allowed him to see people for who they really are. And that while he may be socially inept, not fit in, and not have friends, the other kids have phony relationships. And he's saying it's the same as being alone is the same as having a 'fake' relationship. Regardless, this song is definitely about self discovery, like Greyshoes said. The masturbation idea hasn't really appealed to me because so many of the lyrics detract from that idea. |

I think this song is about a young girl who is having sex casually to fit in, but when I first heard it I assumed it was about a girl who dreams about a perfect romance but instead finds herself having sex with just some guy. Again, not saying my interpretation is right at all, but it was just a fun way of looking at it: caroline laughs and it's raining all day she loves to be one of the girls -It's been said a hundred times, a girl who wants to fit in socially. she lives in the place in the side of our lives where nothing is ever put straight -I think this refers to her living in her dreamworld. she turns her self round and she smiles and she says "this is it that's the end of the joke" and loses herself in her dreaming and sleep and her lovers walk through in their coats -She dances, daydreams and sleeps. And as she does, has happy fantasies about different lovers. Men who want her and care, romantic men who are like something out of a film. pretty in pink isn't she pretty in pink isn't she... -Every consider that Caroline is an ugly (or at least, not shockingly beautiful) girl, and fantasizes about people talking about how pretty she is? all of her lovers all talk of her notes and the flowers that they never sent -Her imaginary lovers all send and give her wonderful things in her dreams, and she gives them romantic gestures like love notes and wasn't she easy and isn't she pretty in pink -I said before Caroline dreams of being attractive, but she also dreams of having sex with all of these imaginary lovers. She obviously isn't having sex with all these men in real life, but in her dreams she's living like it's one big party. But the real Caroline could never do that because she has moral objections. So in her dreams, Caroline is making love to her true sweethearts, but she knows if she did this in real life she'd just be skanky. the one who insists he was first in the line is the last to remember her name -Her fantasies really do seem to love her, but even Caroline realizes that they love the fun, cheerful, 'one-of-the-girls' person who has sex with them. They don't love the dreamy shy girl who made it all up. He doesn't remember Caroline's name because the imaginary lover loves the girl Caroline dreams she was. he's walking around in this dress that she wore she is gone but the joke's the same -The imaginary man is walking in Caroline's dress because he is her. He is just Caroline's idea of what a loving man should be like. When he says sweet things to Caroline, it's really just Caroline in her dress saying kind things to herself. She is 'gone' because she has become someone else. She has become this beautiful, 'easy' girl and she has also become that beautiful girl's many lovers. The 'joke's the same' line means that this is the same person. pretty in pink isn't she pretty in pink isn't she... -Mentioned before caroline talks to you softly sometimes she says "i love you" and "too much" -Caroline is beginning to realize she is to involved with her own fantasies. she doesn't have anything you want to steal well, nothing you can touch -She doesn't have anything they'd want to steal because these imaginary people are all better than her. Caroline has made them more attractive, and with more romanticized lives than her own. They can't touch her because they aren't real. She realizes that these imaginary lovers of her can't really touch her or make love to her. she waves...she buttons your shirt the traffic is waiting outside she hands you this coat she gives you her clothes these cars collide -Caroline stops with the fantasies by removing the sexual element (buttons your shirt). She gives the imaginary self and boyfriends her goodbye by giving them her old identity symbolically through her clothes. The last line is saying that the imaginary lives have collided with each other and have been destroyed in the process. ----------- Besides that little joke interpretation of mine, I have a question for people trying to figure this song out. Throughout the song, it mentions Caroline and 'you'. Well, who is 'you'? This may sound silly, but if we figure out who the writers are refering too, figuring the song's details will be easier. Is 'you', Caroline's boyfriend? Is the listener 'you'? Or is the narrator? Just something I've been trying to figure out. Also, since this wasn't added to the original lyrics, here's the last (albeit slightly muttered) part of the song at the end: caroline's on the table screaming confidence is in the sea and all their favorite rags are worn and other kinds of uniform they kid you you're really free and you know what you want to be case of individuality until tomorrow and everything you are you'll see in pure shiny buttons they put you in this gear and driveways broken doorbell sings in chimes it plays anything goes bells toll in rhyme -Could 'it plays anything goes' refer to Cole Porter's famous song 'Anything Goes'? |

Maybe this is because I always viewed this song in a personal way about my life. This song to me is about someone who always wants things to be happy and cheerful even when they're not. They are willing to lie to themselves and other people and dominate just to cover everything with this beautiful little veneer of happiness and love. Whenever you try and tell them about the problems surrounding them, they'll become aggressive. Again, this is personal. It reminds me of someone in my life who always wanted peace and quiet even though there were serious problems in the relationship. I remember trying to address an important issue with this person only to get "I want peace and quiet!", when I again tried to address it, I got "Peace and quiet!" screamed at me. I can't help but associate this song with that relationship. That idea of how people can become so wrapped up in their self centered idealist fantasies of their perfect lives and end up becoming worse than anything they could've imagined. |

I totally agree with Deafeuphoria. I was looking through the comments, wondering if anyone came to the same conclusion as me. I think Johnny was raped by another boy while at high school. One thing in his youth will forever change his future. I also think Johnny kills himself later on in life. But this is a quick analysis. I had just heard the song, and it clicked to me. |

| Jefferson Airplane – Today Lyrics | 16 years ago |

To me, this song is about seeing someone. And at first it's just a passing crush, and you see obvious flaws in them. There are moments where you're so close to saying 'I love you'. Like maybe asking them on a date or being alone. This transformation comes from wanting to do everything to be near them. And after that moment of near confession, you never speak of it again. You can't. You try talking again, but there's a block. Despite that, whenever you are alone you can speak freely. But the closeness of the public, and your inward fears stop it. You keep telling yourself you'll get over it, but then years pass until you finally realize. Today, I love that person. My God, what a response that awoke in me. Seriously, when was the last time you, the reader, have been moved so heavily by emotion? This song has arisen something in me I never thought music could. |

| Flobots – Handlebars Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I think this song is about people who try to act superior, and how this is something we all do. I'm sure you've met someone in your life whose started dropping names of famous authors whose books they were reading, or how they like really obscure (And therefore better) music. People who intentionally act like 'rebels' so they can be 'unique'. They think (Or at least act) like they are these kind, good hearted intellectuals who don't care what people think of them. We've all done it. We've all acted like were smart, or talented. We've all lied and cheated to make ourselves look better or dominate. Whether we can actually 'ride our bikes with no handlebars' is irrlevant. Because they can 'lead a nation with a microphone', they cn munipulate and get people to believe them. Maybe this means facism. Or egomania. Or zealous patriotism. I don't know. But the intimidation and power of the lies or actual power is more important. It doesn't matter if they can or cannot send you to prison because they don't like you, you'll still be wary just in case. This was more of a drabble of random ideas for people to consider. |

This song is very cool. Unlike most songs about breakups written by women (Which are generally about how her life is over with her beau) this song is defiantly 'rock' in every sense of the word. This song is about a woman after a breakup. But instead of being depressed and lonely, she decides to get back at the guy. Using black mail with personal information she learned during their relationship and threats of physical violence. |

| Kimya Dawson – The Beer Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
My opinion of this song is also very similar to charolastra's review, but I have some variations: The first part of the song introduces a lot of mindless violence. From being punched in the face, lighting her friend's house on fire, and shooting one's self in the head. Despite having '20/20 vision', the narrator seems pretty blind, metaphorically, of course. Here's some examples: 'the beer i had for breakfast was a bottle of mad dog and my 20/20 vision was fifty percent off' The main character's violence has blinded her. The constant partying and brutality, even if it wasn't intended to be malicious, has made the narrator blind and descending into savagery. 'you said punch-buggy red and punched me right in my left eye i said don't you mean pediddle? and i lit his house on fire he came home on acid i was holding his shotgun i was dressed like tina turner in beyond thunder dome he said don't shoot, i said i won't i love you you're my friend i handed him my wig and shot myself in the head then i stuffed a box of tissues in the hole in my skull' More senseless violence. The final act, where she blows her brains out, is a metaphor. Her brains aren't there anymore. And she has descended into savagery or social conformity. Or both. She stuffs the hole in her head with tissues since her brains aren't there. So instead of self reflection and intellectualism, her mind is nothing more than white, fluffy tissues. Also, this part of the song mentions Tina Turner, a celebrity. This could be a reference to how society only cares about trivial things. When has knowing how Tina Turner dressed important? 'i got in my mazda and i drove to the mall i got a big johnson shirt and some silicone tits when i pulled out the tissues they were covered with shit and the beer i had for breakfast was a box of cheap white wine and the boom box on my shoulder was a box of clementines i ate every single one without noticing the mold you said you're gross my darling, i said no i'm rock and roll' In this part, she becomes a silicone breasted, empty headed moron. This is shown by the fact that the tissues are covered with shit. She had brains, lost them because of senseless violence, had tissues for brains, and now they are covered with 'shit'. By 'shit' Dawson could be meaning the stupidity of society or the materialness of people. By making herself some big breasted product of moronic plastic surgery she has lost all of her identity and is 'full of shit'. 'even though i'd never ever been in a band i got cool as black ice tattooed on my hand' The person isn't _______ but they did something suggesting they were ______. This is her way of mocking people who pretend to be something they are not. You can fill the blanks with whatever you want. 'and the christians gave me comic books as if i would be scared of burning in hell well i was already there and the beer i had for breakfast silver bullet in the brain and the beer i had for lunch was a bottle of night train and the beer i had for dinner was my crazy neighbor's pills we had to sit down on skateboards jut to make it down the hill then i peed my pants and you stole the groom's cigar and some old man made me watch him masturbate locked in his car' In the first line (Christians gave me comic books..) is to show that in her recklessness she no longer fears death. The narrator parties every night, undergoes useless surgery, doesn't eat properly and is pretty much destroying them self. There is no point in fearing death, since her personality and individuality died a long time ago (When I pulled out the tissues they were covered with shit). 'Silver bullet' is a sort of advertisement for the 'Coors Light' brand of bear. A 'night train' is a train that operates at night with sleeping cars. She could possibly mean she feel asleep drunk at lunch while wandering/travelling? I'm not sure, I don't think it's a big factor. The last few lines are random and senseless acts of sexual deviancy and social disorder. This ties in with the first line (Of hell well I was already there!) 'when i got back to the apartment you were face down on the floor you said don't go to bed yet let's go get a 64 and the beer i had had for breakfast was a pint of jim beam and a fifth of peach schnapps and some warm sunny d and you said bottoms up just as i bottomed out i tried to scream fuck you but blood was pouring out my mouth' The narrator has reached rock bottom. Not only is she isolated, but she's sick and completely lost. The madness of part of the song explains the horrors of alcohol addictions, conformity, and the horrible vulgarity of everyday life. 'evan dando never planned on telling you the truth and your Leonardo i.d. card is your fountain of youth you can be a teenager for your whole fucking life just find some pretty sucker and make that bitch your wife' Evan Dando is a musician. So obviously the person the narrator is talking looks up or idolizes Dando but Dawson is explaining that that person's idol doesn't care about him and there is no point in idolizing him. 'Leonardo' is a Germanic name for 'lion strength'. So the person the narrator is talking to associates their physical strength or athletic ability as their only distinguishable character trait. Obviously, it is completely moronic to base your entire identity off of your athletic ability. The person who the narrator is talking to (Let's call him 'Person2') doesn't want to accept their morality (Like many teenagers) and is afraid of getting old. So in order to stay a 'teenager for you whole fucking life', he makes stupid and poor decisions to maintain is youth. 'i guess by now you all know my friends danny broke his neck he was driving home from sirens when he got into a wreck first i cried for him and then i cried for me haunted by the ghost of the girl i used to be' The narrator looses a friend of hers, Danny. Danny had been living a similar lifestyle to the narrator, and this horrible and tragic event was the only thing to wake the narrator up to the horrors of the way they had been living. She finally realizes that she will die too, or end up like 'Person2' (Making poor decisions that will destroy the rest of your life), and decides to change. She cannot stay the way she is (The silicone breasted conforming moron) or go back to being the innocent child she once was ('The girl I used to be'). Both of these periods of her life will stay with her forever (Haunted by the girl I used to be). 'but the rocks with holes are warm in my hands and i buried my toes in the hot hot sand and the silver pink pony kisses me and says you've come a long, long way and you deserve to be really happy ' The 'rocks with holes' could be rings. Or a symbol for commitment. So she possibly is opening herself to commitment. But the true message of this part is where the 'silver pink pony' forgives her and wants her to move forward with her life. The 'silver pink pony' might be a 'my little pony' toy. So as a little girl she would play with 'My Little Pony's. The symbol of her childhood realizes the pain she has endured while growing up and finally decides that even after everything she has done that she has to move forward with life. The symbol of her childlike self kisses her, and this could mean that the narrator finally forgives herself for everything that has happened. With this newfound realization and self forgiveness, the narrator can finally move on with her life. |

I was wanting to do a piece of art based on this song and so far all I've seen is a petty argument about 'posers', debates about what depression really is and the same interpretation of being depressed (And over coming it). Please don't post things like that here, no body really cares if you think this song is 'poser'. You're probably doing it for attention and to define yourself as an intellectual. I really think this song is about a kid who is deeply depressed, but it sounds like the kid has been heavily affected by something in his past and his lost of innocence ('Sixteen just held such better days'). I think the thing that made this boy suicidal was bullying or some sort of abuse ('I never conquered'). I don't think the source of the singer's depression is a poor relationship with his parents. Since he disregards his mother of any blame for the situation. Usually when a child is in an abusive relationship with a parent, they usually blame the other parent for not defending them, even if this other parent never directly hurt the child. Also, the kid seems to really want to go home, so the problem and source of his depression is either at school or other outside activity. School, however, seems like a better candidate. Since if another activity was the source of pain, you would simply quit. The song makes a reference to "Come as You Are" by Nirvana with the lyrics, "I took my time, I hurried up, The choice was mine, I didn't think enough." While Nirvana's lyrics are "Take your time, hurry up, the choice is yours, don't be late. So the meaning of this song probably has some connection with the meaning of this Nirvana song. I'm not a big Nirvana fan, and only listen to a couple of their songs, so I can't really make an argument or point off of this because of how little I understand Nirvana's music. But apparently the song 'Come as You Are' is about the fear of being judged. So I can see how that would tie in and relate to a child who is being bullied. It's a good song, I remember me and my father listening to this song in his truck. We used to talk about it a lot. And finally, please try to avoid petty arguments here. No one else cares if you think this song sucks, they just want to understand this piece of music better. |

Hmm. This song is interesting. From the few Nirvana songs I listened to so far (I'm still getting into music and trying out different genres) they really have a strong dislike for people who only like their music because it popular, without any idea what the music is about. Like 'In Bloom' for example. Maybe this is a less obvious song which a similar message to 'In Bloom'? I can't help but this this is Nirvana's critic of teenagers at the time. The 90s had a dramatic rise in crime, and more and more teeangers were having sex, doing drugs, drinking heavily, committing suicide, etc. The band members of Nirvana weren't saints by any means, but maybe they were just sick at the cultural wasteland that kids were engaging in? |

| 3 Doors Down – Away From The Sun Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I always had mixed opinions of this song. They include addiction (Alcohol, drugs, anything else), religion, or low self esteem. 'It's down to this I've got to make this life make sense Can anyone tell what I've done I miss the life I miss the colors of the world Can anyone tell where I am' For addiction, when you look back you miss what you had. In a severe addiction to any substance your body starts to drastically change, you can develop mental illness, have nightmares, lose body functions, twitch, become weak, etc. The singer's character (Or the singer himself), realizes how in what a horrible state he is in and desperately misses his younger body before the addiction. From the lyrics, it could be possible the singer is an adult and has moved out/is living on the street. He is scared because he can't go home/doesn't have one and has no idea where to turn for help. On the idea of depression, it could mean that he is extremely depressed and misses the days he could be happy. He feels like there is no one to help him through this or to relate, a common feeling during depression. My opinion of the song being about religion also ties in with depression. The person was probably religious (Or a believer) before (Of any religion, I don't think it really has any real effect.). He is now depressed and is so trapped that any hope he has of 'finding his sun' or 'light at the end of the tunnel' is gone, and so is his faith and religion. He feels like God betrayed him. 'Cause now again I've found myself So far down Away from the sun that shines into The darkest place I'm so far down Away from the sun again Away from the sun again' Back to addiction. Hopelessness is common in addicts. You feel like after all you've done there's no way you could ever go back to your previous state of being. You are phsyically, mentally physiologically damaged. Not to mention the pure humiliation and social contempt that recovered addicts face day in and day out. On the depression part, feelings of isolation. As for religion, in many faiths, (the) God(s) are associated with the sun. Being away from the 'sun' could mean being distant from God. To the point where the devine being has ceased to exist or indifferent to the singer's plight. I might go on to explain more, the generally the song is open to interpretation because of how clear and effective it's lyrics are. It's a fantastic song. |

| M2M – Don't Say You Love Me Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
When I was little, I just thought this song was fun with it's cute beat and fun vocals. But now that I'm older I think it's about a boy and a girl at the drive in, and the boy wants to have sex. The girl doesn't want to, and the song follows her feelings (Not like we're gonna get married, give me some time, you don't even know me). It's probably a first date, or something very early in a relationship. Anyway, great song, very cute. Anyway, I'm pretty tired of all of these sexist remarks on this page. All men are vicious perverts. Yes, men tend to be more sexual, but it doesn't make them all pigs. |

| I always thought this song was about a very streotypical 'masculine' woman. But the lyrics do seem to really suggest a transexuality. But I'll keep viewing as about a manly girl because that's how I prefer the song. But I really do love this song. 'Lola' is such a cute one with really clever humor throughout it. | |
| Nirvana – In Bloom Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I think this is about more than just people who listen to Nirvana or other bands because they want to look cool. I think that if they wrote a song about people who think this way and only thought about their band they'd be real narrow minded. And I don't want to think that they thought like that. I think they were refering to people with this mentality as a whole. Where their image is the most important thing. I also believe this is about looking at yourself in a critical light. 'Nature is a whore'. Human nature right? And we are all human. So I guess the band is saying that they have thought like this once and said to themsleves that this isn't they way they should be thinking and decided to make themselves better. It's about improving and trying to see more. | |
| Nirvana – Heart-Shaped Box Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I think this song is about emptiness. I mean, heart shaped box? Sounds like a empty thing which poses as something good. Like a lie or illusion. And if you watch the video, theres a scene of an elderly Jesus wearing a santa and pope hat. Then theres a fat women without skin and wings jumping around. I'm still confused, but to me this is about emptiness. What is empty I don't know. A relationship (Doesn't have to be romantic), or maybe even the way people around Cobain had been living. And really, I think a musician of Cobain's level would simply like people to make their own connections to his music, rather than try to get inside his head. |

| My Chemical Romance – House Of Wolves Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I know this isn't the real song meaning but I always thought of it this way: There is a boy, his mother, his father and his sister. His father loves his sister and not him. And his mother loves both her children. There is a fire, his mother dies and he goes to the hospital. His father and sister never visit him again. The first stanza is about how the priest comes to comfort him, but he only wants his mother. So he starts mocking the priest. In the second stanza he hears his mother is dead but the entire house didn't burn down. Enraged he wishes the entire house burned down with it. 3rd stanza: He stays in the hospital for reasons other than burns, but for mental help. They think the fire tramatized him but really it's his father issues (Tell me I'm a bad man, bad son?). Or it could be he is burned so badly and wants to talk about his father but physically can't. Either or. 4th stanza: He has a girlfriend but she can't see him like this? Or she moved away? Either way, I think the 'lover' still loves him. He just doesn't know it. 5th stanza: I think the people playing ring around the ambulence is how he thinks he's going to die and they are joyous he's dying. He compares these shadow children to his father. And begins to rant about him. He knows his father never loved him 'play ring around the ambulence like you never gave a care! ' and 'ashes to ashes we all fall down' an example of his father's lack of sympathy and compassion. But he wants his father to love him, to praise him. 6th stanza: An example of how his father's cruelty has effected him. Making him beleive he is responsible for his mother's death and worthless. Hence, how he is going to burn in hell. 7th stanza: Same as third stanza. 8th stanza: The 'you better run like the devil' line I think applies to his girlfriend, or maybe his paranoia that he is responsible for his mothers death and believes she will haunt him? The last few lines talk about how his mother died ('blood runs down the walls'). Again his father's love for his sister and not him is mentioned. And the 'go go go!' being his mother screaming for him not to try and save her. 9th stanza: Same as third and seventh. 10th and 11th stanza: talks abot how his father's critisim has finally driven him overboard and he fully believes it. ----------------------- Okay, before anyone says anything this is not the right meaning! But this is how I always thought about it. What it made ME feel. And isn't that what poetry and music is about? Interpertation and feeling? Anyway, hope this makes you think. 'Cause I'm really enjoying reading other peoples' interpetations and the actual song meanings! :) |
