| I would say that this song works on both concrete and metaphorical levels. It is about werewolves, but isn't the very concept of a werewolf a metaphore for releasing your inner beast? Your inner beast could be anything that releases you from the confinement of human institutions. Taking drugs, being violent, roaming free... anything goes as far as I'm concerned. | |

If those herbs were known to cause abortion it seems very likely that they have been attributed magical properties. They could represent the magic of love - maybe even impossible/forbidden love. In that case they fit perfectly with the original lyrics: Two once were lovers are geographically seperated and their love is no longer possible. They each message the other to perform some impossible task, representing the impossible nature of their love. The herbs could just symbolize the same. Or, being magic, they could be a symbol of the hope of the impossible love to become possible. If the above holds true, then the extra lyrics in the S&G version do not contradict original meaning. The original lyrics represent the impossible love, end the war represents the (meaningles) reason why it is impossible. |
